At a glance, you could easily mistake the new TTS Roadster’s interior for the old car’s cabin. It gets more high-tech kit than ever, however, and most of it comes as standard
The Audi TTS Roadster’s interior comes with a plethora of posh materials – from the metal air vent surrounds to the leather padding on the centre console. The racing car-inspired flat-bottomed steering wheel comes with suede-like Alcantara trim and the centre console gets a glossy colour-coded paint job to match the TTS Roadster’s exterior.
Instead of a cluttered, button-laden dashboard like you get in a Mercedes SLC 43, the Audi TTS Roadster makes do with a single row of slick metal toggle switches. Even the heating and ventilation controls are neatly integrated into the air vents themselves to keep the TTS Roadster’s cabin looking as simple and as smart as possible.
Another feature you won’t find in the likes of the Mercedes SLC 43 is the Audi TTS Roadster’s digital driver’s display. This Virtual Cockpit system (yup, that’s what Audi calls it) replaces the speedometer and rev counter dials with a customisable screen that can show a range of high-resolution graphics.
Slightly less futuristic – but no less upmarket – are the TTS Roadster’s standard sports seats. These come with leather and Alcantara upholstery and some bright red contrasting stitching – just like in high-performance RS models.
No-one does sporty interiors quite like Audi. Somehow it’s managed to make the TTS Roadster’s cabin easy to use, yet still ooze with minimalist cool…
Unlike most small sports cars, the Audi TTS Roadster doesn’t come with a central infotainment display – instead, you get a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display that replaces conventional analogue instruments.
Using the buttons on the steering wheel and the rotary controller on the centre console you can customise this screen to show a pair of digital dials, a widescreen sat nav display or even an Audi TTS-specific sports setup with a large central rev counter.
There’s a handy set of shortcut buttons down on the centre console to make it as easy as possible to skip from one key feature to another without jumping into a sea of confusing menus. As a result, it’s much easier to use than the convoluted system you get in a Mercedes SLC 43, but it isn’t quite as intuitive as the BMW M240i Convertible’s iDrive setup.
The latest TTS Roadster comes with Audi’s technology pack as standard. This brings with it a wireless phone charger, a 10GB hard drive and satellite navigation. The latter lets you input an address using either the on-screen keyboard or the voice recognition system and displays clear directions superimposed on high-definition Google Maps.
Don’t fancy using Audi’s own sat nav? No problem – the Audi TTS Roadster comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring so you can beam your favourite navigation apps onto the car’s built-in screen instead.
This feature also lets you play music from apps such as Spotify through the Audi TTS Roadster’s built-in stereo – a nine-speaker system that’s easily loud enough to hear clearly when you’re driving with the roof down. If you’re a die-hard music fan, however, you’ll want to upgrade to a Black Edition model. These come with an even punchier Bang & Olufsen 12-speaker system with a noise cancelling feature that helps down out as much wind and tyre noise as possible – with the roof up, at least.
