Is the Bentley Torcal a good car?

The Bentley Tocal is a new leap for the iconic British brand, because it’s the first ever Bentley electric car. It’s a big, luxurious SUV with the usual degree of poshness inside and big, imposing styling on the outside, but it isn’t quite as classy to look at as Bentleys of old and it’s pretty pricey, too.

The Torcal really is unlike any other Bentley, but that’s partly to do with the fact that it’s mechanically related to the new Porsche Cayenne Electric - a thoroughly futuristic piece of kit. You can cross-shop it against other luxury EVs in the new Range Rover Electric or Mercedes G-Class Electric, too.

It’s a bit like your favourite country club opening up a rooftop bar in the heart of London. There’s just as much pomp and grandeur as you’ll find in the wood-and-leather countryside retreat, but it’s all a bit slicker, a bit more modern and full of lights, everywhere you look.

Chiefly at the front, where Bentley certainly hasn’t been shy with the Torcal’s design. Gone is the traditional chrome-and-mesh upright grille that you’ve come to expect from a big Bentley, replaced by a massive transparent panel housing 76 illuminated diamonds. It’s not exactly subtle, but at least there’s no mistaking the Torcal for anything else on the road.

The rest of the Torcal is pretty far removed from the Bentayga (Bentley’s other SUV), with a far lower roofline, more muscular haunches at the back and a very slick rear end which has abandoned the typical oval-shaped lights. The rump is actually quite similar to the seven-seater Skoda Peaq.

Step inside and you enter a world of opulence, perhaps unsurprising given the winged-B on the steering wheel. This may be a futuristic car, but it’s still one which you can specify to your heart’s desire. If you want to channel your inner duke or duchess, there are plenty of wood and leather options to get lost in, as well as more modern carbon fibre and metal choices instead.

I was shocked when I first saw the Torcal, but its looks grew on me pretty quickly

We’ve had a poke around a Torcal at the car’s static UK launch, and the interior quality is just as luxurious as in any other Bentley, with intricate details such as the hidden air vents, knurled switchgear and a slick infotainment system with an aggressively curved display. There’s enough ambient lighting quirkiness going on to rival Piccadilly Circus, too.

You won’t struggle to get comfortable inside as there’s loads of room front and rear with highly supportive seats and plenty of storage space, too. Shame the 460-litre boot is smaller than that in a Porsche Cayenne Electric, but at least it’s leather-lined.

There’s a huge 113kWh battery under the Torcal’s floor, providing up to 375 miles of range with a charging speed of 400kW, meaning 10-80% takes just 16 minutes.

We have yet to drive the Torcal, but given Bentley makes some phenomenally comfortable cars in the Bentayga and Continental GT and the mechanically-similar Cayenne Electric is great to drive, we’re expecting big things here.

How much is the Bentley Torcal?

The Bentley Torcal starts at an eye-watering £170,000 or thereabouts, which is £40,000 more than a top-spec Cayenne Electric and £16,000 more than a Range Rover Electric. For that you get the 375-mile range figure, 21-inch wheels, gloss black exterior details, LED lights and leather/artificial suede interior upholstery.

The Torcal S is more expensive and more powerful, with more aggressive styling including 22-inch wheels, dark-tinted glass and taillights, S-specific lighting and badging, too.
