Fastest supermini city cars – quick & compact

City cars are designed with the urban landscape in mind. These small, agile cars are often good fun to drive anyway but, when manufacturers add bigger engines with more power to this already likeable combination, you really can start to enjoy yourself.

So, if you like your cars small but not too sedate, here’s a list of the fastest city cars available on the market. Don’t forget, you can put any of these cars in our car configurator to discover how much carwow could help you save.

Audi S1

The Audi S1 may be small but costs from £25,420 – hardly a small investment. As the ‘baby’ of the Audi S family, you can expect some impressive performance for all that money. The S1 features a whopping 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine developing 228hp, which, with four-wheel drive, gets it to 62mph from a standstill in just 5.8 seconds.

The massive performance should seal the deal for most but, if it doesn’t, the overwhelming quality on show here really should. The Audi S1 offers build quality rarely matched in this sector. There’s no automatic option, so you’ll have to do the work yourself with the Audi’s six-speed manual.

Fiat 500 Abarth Biposto

The Fiat 500 is already one of the most fun-to-drive city cars out there, but giving it the Abarth treatment really kicks things up a notch. In Biposto form, you get a 1.4-litre turbo that develops 190hp in a car weighing just 997kg. That adds-up to a 0-60mph time of just 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 143mph.

Its average fuel economy is also pretty good at a claimed 45.6mph, depending on how you drive it that is. Although, for a performance car like this, it probably wouldn’t be a major factor in deciding to buy one or not.

Mini Hatchback John Cooper Works

The latest Mini Hatchback John Cooper Works really packs a punch – its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol develops 231hp, making it the most powerful production Mini ever. The engine propels it from 0-60mph in as little as 6.1 seconds when fitted with the automatic gearbox, and on to a top speed of 153mph.

As well as being fast, the Mini John Cooper Works is also extremely well put together and feels really good quality wherever you touch. It costs from an eye-watering £23,050, however, so it’s definitely not cheap.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR

The Vauxhall Corsa VXR has a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine that develops an impressive 202hp. That translates to 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 143mph. It’s only available in three-door form, but having the same amount of interior space as the standard car means it’s surprisingly practical as well.

If you also want impressive fuel economy though, you’d probably be better of looking elsewhere because the VXR will only return 37.7mpg on average.

Ford Fiesta ST

The Ford Fiesta ST packs a 1.6-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engine and gets you from 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds, and on to a top speed of 139mph. Go for the top-spec ST-3 trim and you get a car that’s stylish, fast and fabulously well equipped.

It handles in a manner that shames performance cars costing many times as much – its balance, grip and agility are hugely impressive. This isn’t just one of the most fun cars you can currently buy, it’s one of the most fun cars ever made.
