You have to consider a range of things when picking your next family car. Is it reliable? How safe is it? How much space is there inside?
Another important factor to consider is its running costs. High fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions are important and help keep monthly outgoings down. So which are the most economical compact people carriers on sale today? We’re looking at the top five.
5 – Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi

4 – Toyota Prius+ Hybrid
The Toyota Prius+ is unique in the class, as it’s the only hybrid mini-MPV available in the UK. It’s also the only petrol on this list, which means company car buyers will benefit from company car tax rate of only 12 per cent. It offers seven seats in the well-built cabin, and the hybrid system allows for a couple of miles on electric power alone – perfect for crawling through traffic.
At 68.9mpg, the claimed fuel consumption figure is identical to the Renault Scenic, but it’s worth bearing in mind that petrol costs less than diesel at the pumps.

3 – BMW 216d Active Tourer
BMW was very late to the people carrier party but, despite being its first effort, the 2 Series Active Tourer is one of the very best out there. Based on the Mini’s platform, the 2 Series Active Tourer is comfortable and massively stable when it goes down the road.
Not only does the 216d return 74.3mpg, but it manages to crack the 0-62mph sprint in 10.6 seconds – very impressive for such a frugal motor. You’ll be paying at least £3,000 more than equivalent mainstream rivals – but it’s a very competent family car if you’re happy to stretch your budget.

2 – Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDi
The Citroen C4 Picasso is one of our favourite mini MPVs, thanks to its spacious interior, smooth ride and – of course – the economical range of engines. The most frugal is the 1.6 e-HDi diesel. With an mpg figure identical to that of the BMW 2 Series above and emissions of only 98g/km, it should make for a frugal family runabout.
If that wasn’t enough, the Picasso’s distinctive styling and funky, high quality interior proves that people carriers don’t have to be boring either!

1 – Mercedes B 180 CDI ECO
The Mercedes B-Class‘ new family face is easy to spot but, with the B 180 CDI achieving 78.5mpg, your local fuel station isn’t the best place to try to see one.
CO2 emissions of only 94g/km means not only is it free to tax for private buyers, but it drops into the 14 per cent company car tax band – lower than any other diesel MPV on the market. Throw in the three pointed star on the bonnet and the lovely cabin that comes with it, and you’ll be buying into a premium marque without the premium running costs.
