The Tesla Model 3 may be the go-to electric saloon for a lot of people, but the BYD Seal is also well worth considering. Here’s why.

There are quite a few Chinese carmakers entering the UK looking to steal some sales from legacy brands, and BYD was one of the first. Its electric saloon car, the Seal, is a very compelling alternative to something like a Tesla Model 3 or a Polestar 2.

Why should you consider the BYD Seal?

Put simply, it’s an electric car which feels posh inside, is really good to drive, and comes with loads of standard equipment.

Interior quality is easily a match for the Tesla Model 3, and it’s almost up there with the BMW i4 and Polestar 2. Not only is it well-made and stylish, you get toys such as a 15.6-inch rotating infotainment system, a heated steering wheel, and heated seats as standard.

Out on the road, the Seal manages to strike a balance between great handling and comfort. It’s a relaxing car to cruise around in, but on a B-road it’s actually quite good fun to chuck around.

You can get up to 354 miles of range from the Seal, which is just over 30 miles more than the most basic Tesla Model 3 but more than 100 miles less than the Long-Range version of that car. If you fancy a blistering turn of speed, you can sacrifice 30 miles of range to get the 530hp dual-motor version which will do 0-60mph in just 3.8 seconds.

Lease a BYD Seal for £274 per month

The BYD Seal looks even more tempting when you lease through Carwow, because it’s available from just £273.14 per month. This is over 24 months with an initial payment of £3,572.68, and a mileage limit of 5,000 per year.

Need to go further than that? You can double the mileage limit and still pay just £304.44 per month over 24 months with a £4,003.27 initial payment.

This great deal is on the basic Design model with 354 miles of range and a generous list of standard kit. You get heated leather seats, a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, and keyless entry.

BYD Seal alternatives

The BYD Seal is great, but not perfect. Here are three alternatives which shine in areas where the BYD falls down.

Tesla Model 3 – Goes further on a charge

The Tesla Model 3 can go up to 466 miles on a charge if you go for the Long-Range Rear-Wheel drive version, which is over 100 miles further than the BYD. The interior is slightly less user-friendly though thanks to the total lack of buttons.

BMW i4 – Bigger boot

The BYD Seal’s 400-litre boot trails behind most alternatives. The BMW i4 offers 470-litres of space, as well as a more practical hatchback tailgate. It’s a lot more expensive to buy than the BYD though.

Polestar 2 – The stylish choice

The BYD Seal looks a bit plain on the outside, whereas the Polestar 2 is packed with Swedish style – both inside and out. The suspension is a bit firm though, and you don’t get a great view out of the back.
