Citroen is joining the retro-styled electric car bandwagon by reviving the 2 CV, and it could end up being the cheapest new car on sale when the production model comes to market in 2028.

This is the new Citroen 2 CV concept, and it’s been on the cards for a while now. Rumours that Citroen would revive this iconic affordable car have been circulating for years, but now it’s finally here.

The styling stays true to the original car launched in 1948, as does the price tag. The 2 CV was designed after the second world war as a way to mobilise the French people, and as such it had to be affordable. It cost about £300 when it was first unveiled in the ‘40s, about £10,000 in today’s money, and the new one will cost less than £13,000.

New Citroen 2 CV design

Until now, Citroen hasn’t really followed the crowd when it comes to retro design. Renault has revived the 5 and the Twingo, but Citroen’s e-C3 looks nothing like models of old. That all changes with the 2 CV concept.

Citroen has managed to make it look almost exactly the same as the original, but in a more modern way. The way the headlights protrude from the front wing is a nod to that car, and the LED daytime running lights are similar to the ones you’ll find on the new Renault Twingo.

It retains the same bubble-like silhouette of the old 2 CV, and it has a roll-back cloth roof as well. The production version may be toned-down slightly – you can expect to see thicker A-pillars to comply with modern safety regulations.

The retro theme continues inside, starting with the seats. The old 2 CV had very basic metal frames with fabric stretched between them, like a deck chair, and while this new concept looks to have a bit more padding they do look very similar.

The gear selector is a nod to the old car as well, which looked like an umbrella handle poking out of the dashboard. Being an affordable model the tech in here is pretty simple as well. There’s a small screen next to the steering wheel, and that’s about your lot.

The string of fairy lights around the roof lining is another quirky touch, and there are slots for holding eggs in the dashboard. Why? Well the original 2 CV was designed to cope with the ruined roads of France following the war, and one of the briefs when making it was that you had to be able to drive over a plowed field with a basket of eggs on the back seat without breaking any of them. You can therefore expect the new 2 CV to be a comfortable car over bumps.

When can I buy the new Citroen 2 CV?

This is just a concept car for now. There are no technical details about batteries, range or performance yet, but a production model is scheduled for release in 2028. Being a sub-£13,000 electric car, you can expect it to be aimed at urban living. A range of around 160 miles would put it in-line with cars like the Renault Twingo.
