Is the Fiat Topolino a good car?
Topolino is a historic Fiat name, now applied to this: a dinky little two-seater EV, based closely on the Citroen Ami and designed with your favourite Italian cittadina in mind. It’s stylish and brimming with charm, but its tiny range and lack of storage mean it isn’t very useful.
A bit like a pair of espadrilles or ballet pumps, the Topolino is certainly chic, but there are far more practical options around for undertaking longer journeys. There may not be any new cars which are this affordable, with the Dacia Spring and Leapmotor T03 both starting at around £15,000, but unlike the Fiat they’re ‘proper’ cars.
Still, none look quite as cute as the Topolino with its throwback styling to the 1950s Fiat 500 and pastel colour palette of sea foam and coral. It certainly looks more complete than the double-ended Citroen Ami.
The same applies to the interior, where the Topolino’s stripy dashboard storage box, two-tone seats and bespoke instrument display binnacle add a smidge of class to the otherwise plastic-fantastic cabin. The glass sunroof helps, too, and Fiat will sell you a range of accessories such as a fan, or a speaker to pop on the dash.
I wouldn’t want to take it on a dual-carriageway, but I reckon the Topolino is perfect as a city-only runaround
While it may seem like the perfect car to pop to the shops in, the lack of a boot says otherwise. There’s enough room in the passenger footwell to fit some bags down by your feet, but you’re better off raiding Gucci or Prada solo.
The Topolino comes fitted with a 5.4kWh battery for up to 46 miles of range from a full charge. Speaking of which, the 7.4kW maximum charge speed will top the battery up from empty in about four hours. A road-trip companion this is not, but around town that’s perfectly adequate.
Its Ami roots mean the Topolino should be just as easy to live with in the city, with a tiny turning circle and great visibility all round - not to mention its tiny size. It may be left-hand drive only, but with a footprint not much larger than a kitchen island, that hasn’t been an issue in its Citroen counterpart.
Motorway journeys will be off-limits in the Topolino, legally, but even if it were legal - it’s not smart to attempt the M1 in a car limited to 28mph.

How much is the Fiat Topolino?
The Topolino costs a fiver under £9,000 in standard form or in the ‘Corale’ edition with its pretty, coral paint finish. There aren’t any real options to choose from, as both versions come as standard with bright exterior trim details, retro wheel caps, a glass panoramic roof and the same storage compartments on the dash and door cards.
You can pay extra for floor mats, rear carriage storage, a sunblind for the roof and a bag hook, but the price difference will be negligible in the grand scheme of things. The only real marker to compare the Fiat to is the Citroen Ami, which costs around £1,300 less, but it’s also less charming and doesn’t look as posh as the Fiat.
For the money, however, you might well be better off buying a used Smart car or the multitude of other city cars on sale - unless the Topolino is to be a second or third car. It’s cute, but it’s not practical anywhere other than in town.
