Citroen Ami Review & Prices
The Citroen Ami is a funky little city car that’s great fun for cheap, but very few will find it fits their lifestyle

This is the Ami, a cute and quirky city ‘car’ from Citroen. It’s a bit like one of those Little Tikes kids’ cars has had a glow up. It’s not much bigger than those red-and-yellow toy cars and doesn’t have much more on-board technology, but instead of using foot power you get an electric motor.
That’s perhaps a little unfair on the Citroen Ami. It’s actually a quadricycle rather than electric car, and one of its key demographics is young people in France, who can drive it from the age of 14. However, after the UK public went crazy for it, Citroen decided to bring it over here, too. It's Opel counterpart, the Rocks-e, won't be coming over to the UK as a Vauxhall, though.
To keep the price down, the front and rear body panels are identical and interchangeable – the lights are red at the back while up front you get your typical clear headlights. The doors are also mirror images either side, so the passenger side is hinged at the rear and opens like a normal car door, but the driver’s side opens the other way. See, told you it was quirky.
Speaking of the driver’s side, it would be too much work to swap the Ami to right-hand drive for the UK (and drive the price up), so all of them are left-hand drive. That’s not really a problem, because there’s so much glass in the Ami you can see clearly all around you. Useful, because there’s no rear-view mirror, so you’ll look over your shoulder a lot to scan your surroundings.
Basic is the best word to describe the interior. The seats are surprisingly comfortable and there are big nets for door bins that could take some large bottles with ease. There’s a digital display for your speed but it has the resolution of an old Casio watch, while your infotainment comes in the form of a built-in phone holder. You even need to bring your own Bluetooth speaker.
The Ami might be a bit of fun but you’d be better off buying a used city car for the cash
Practicality isn’t the Ami’s strong point, either. You can get some extra storage areas for the shelf below the windscreen that come in various shapes and sizes, such as a valuables box and cup holder. The passenger footwell is big enough for a carry-on suitcase, though your friends and family might not be too happy that their foot space is being used up.
With an 8hp electric motor running the front wheels, performance isn’t exactly brisk. We managed a respectable 0-25mph time of 7.4 seconds but the Ami tops out at 28mph. There’s a 5.4kWh battery pack that provides a range of up to 46 miles, and you can top it up in four hours with a three-pin plug.
That top speed means you have no choice but to stick to the city – the Ami is actually illegal to use on motorways – and it’s just fast enough that you don’t feel like you’re holding up traffic in a 30mph zone. You really feel the bumps in the road, though. Speed bumps and potholes batter the Ami, yet there’s no denying it puts a smile on your face – and the faces of everyone who sees you.
Manoeuvrability is the Ami’s party trick. Its turning circle is 7.2m, which bests even a London black cab’s 7.6m. It means you can dart around in traffic with ease and treat mini roundabouts like your own personal merry-go-round.
Sure, the Ami isn’t particularly refined nor fast, and it won’t go very far on a charge, but it has more character in its asymmetrically opening doors than most complete cars these days. For the price you might technically be better off getting a used city car, but if its limited usability fits your needs and you like silly things that bring out your inner child, it’s tough to beat.
