A recent off-road battle between the Chery Tiggo 9 and the Land Rover Discovery has Mat Watson browsing the classifieds, and it turns out that a used Discovery is a bit of a bargain.

The Land Rover Discovery is one of my favourite off-roaders, because it’s both comfortable and luxurious as well as being unstoppable when the going gets tough. The only fly in the ointment is the price, because at £65,000 it’s not exactly affordable.

I recently put it up against the Chery Tiggo 9 in a series of off-road challenges, to see if you can get similar capability for £20,000 less. While the Chery was seriously impressive, and won overall thanks to its insane power, the Land Rover was still better in the technical challenges.

So if you want to tackle some seriously tough terrain, but don’t have £65,000 to spend, where does that leave you? Well, you could consider a used Land Rover Discovery instead.

A quick look at Carwow’s used car offerings revealed a handful of Discoverys for less than £20,000, but this is the one that really caught my eye.

It’s a 2022 model with 36,500 miles on the clock, and it’s up for just under £43,000. That’s about the same as a Chery Tiggo 9, and it’s the sporty-looking R-Dynamic SE model.

That means you get a more aggressive-looking bodykit, blacked-out exterior trim and 21-inch alloy wheels. Inside there’s leather upholstery, a large touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and heated seats.

Three things I like about the Land Rover Discovery

Why should you consider a used Land Rover Discovery? Here are three of my favourite things about this car.

1. It’s unstoppable off-road

Land Rover is renowned for making some of the best off-roaders in the world, and the Discovery is testament to this. It has a clever system on board called Terrain Response which can adapt the suspension and traction control to pull you through pretty much anything, and it can even wade though up to 900mm of water.

2. It’s comfortable to drive

Let’s face it, most Discovery owners will probably never take their off-roading beyond a damp campsite, so it’s good that it’s also really comfortable on the road. It soaks up bumps nicely, and you can choose from a range of powerful engines as well.

3. It’s roomy inside

You get seven seats in the Land Rover Discovery, and, unlike some SUVs, there’s enough space for adults in all three rows. You could easily carry seven adults on a long journey, which isn’t something you can say of the Volvo XC90.

Three annoying things about the Land Rover Discovery

It’s not all good news though, because here are three things which might put you off this car.

1. The boot isn’t the best

There may be plenty of space for passengers, but with all seven seats in place the Land Rover Discovery has a pretty small boot. You get 258 litres of space, which is about the same as a small city car such as the Kia Picanto and quite a bit less than you get in an Audi Q7.

2. The design is divisive

Styling is subjective, but the Land Rover Discovery’s looks are pretty polarising. The main point of contention is the offset rear number plate, which makes the rear end look asymmetrical. A Volvo XC90 is more conventionally handsome.

3. Land Rover reliability

Land Rover doesn’t have the best reputation for reliability, and buying a used example means you’ll have little-to-no warranty left. I’d recommend buying an approved used example from Land Rover so you get some sort of coverage.
