Car changing is a big deal
The Range Rover name has been around for more than 50 years and it’s always stood for off-road supremacy – but Tom Wiltshire reckons it’s also the world’s finest luxury car
What makes a perfect luxury car? Comfort, of course, and a bit of exclusivity. A handsome, understated design inside and out is essential, and a refined air to the way it drives is important too – it can’t be too sporty or too soft.
There’s a point somewhere on the luxury car scale where things start to feel a bit ridiculous. For a start, we’ll discount anything that’s truly crazy in price or so ostentatious it’s impractical – a Rolls-Royce certainly ticks all the luxury boxes, but it costs more than a nice house and you can’t park it in the supermarket. Then we can get rid of anything where the styling has slid past classy and become vulgar. That nixes the BMW 7 Series or anything made by Maybach.
The truth is that there’s one car that doesn’t try to redefine what luxury is, it just gets on with perfecting it. It’s at home literally anywhere, and it does so without any pretention – which is rare. That car is the Range Rover.

I’ve been lucky enough to drive quite a few Range Rovers over the years, the most recent being a rather understated dark green example with a diesel engine. And it’s my humble opinion that it genuinely does top the luxury car charts, for a myriad of reasons.
First, let’s get the obvious stuff out of the way. A Range Rover is sumptuously comfortable. All versions of the latest model come with air suspension that irons out even the biggest bumps – it’s more comfortable than any other SUV, and that’s matched by excellent refinement with virtually no wind or road noise.

But a Range Rover is more about how it makes you feel. The driving position is sky-high – you’re almost up there with the vans and lorries – and that means you get a real sense of occasion from behind the wheel.
This is aided by the environment you’re sat in. Okay, so a Range Rover’s interior isn’t perfect – the tech is a little bit behind the times and the button-free centre console can be frustrating. But because Land Rover doesn’t build anything cheaper than an Evoque, you won’t find any switchgear that’s shared with cheap cars. Even on a Bentley Bentayga you’ll find some Volkswagen Group parts bin items, while the top-spec Mercedes GLS uses the same switchgear in places as a boggo-spec A-Class. No such issue on a Range Rover, where every switch and button is top-class.

Then there’s the quiet flex of having genuine capability. You might never need to use it – most Range Rovers won’t see terrain more taxing than a Kensington pothole – but there’s something cool about knowing that, in an off-road situation, a Range Rover is still one of the best there is.
A GLS, X7, Bentayga, Cullinan or Cayenne would be left in the dust, and the Rangie can surge on ahead next to a G-Class or Land Cruiser. It’s the same sort of attitude towards having a luxury watch that can survive a deep-sea scuba dive – you don’t need to use it, you just need to know it can.

The real thing about a Range Rover though is that it’s utterly classless – and I mean that in a positive way. Everybody from rappers to CEOs to harangued parents to country landowners can suit a Range Rover, and it looks equally at home parked outside the Savoy as it does in a muddy field in the Cotswolds.
Every manufacturer dreams of that sort of universal appeal. The Range Rover has road presence without vulgarity – it’s stylish without being shouty, special without being completely unattainable and capable without being compromised. And that’s why it’s the best luxury car you can buy today.
