About Rolls-Royce

One of the most recognised names in motoring, Rolls-Royce is synonymous with luxury.

Founded in 1906, Roll-Royce combined the names of Henry Royce, an engineer, and Charles Rolls, a car dealer and early aviator. The 40/50 of 1908 was the most successful of the company’s early models and became known as the Silver Ghost after one prominent example was finished in silver.

Alongside car production, Roll-Royce became known for its aeroplane engines. Today, the aviation side of the business exists as a separate company.

Fast-forward to 2003, and Rolls-Royce became a subsidiary of BMW. A new factory was built as part of this fresh start in Goodwood, West Sussex.

Under BMW’s ownership, Rolls-Royce continues to build some of the most expensive and luxurious cars in the world. The range includes saloons, coupes and convertibles. An SUV, the Cullinan, was added to the range in 2018 and the company’s first electric car, the Spectre, arrived in 2023.

What our car expert says

“Think of a Rolls-Royce as a kind of four-wheeled Fabergé egg – nobody needs one, but they are beautifully made and we’re very glad they exist. The Phantom saloon is the pinnacle of luxury, wonderfully quiet and comfortable whether you are in the driver’s seat or relaxing in the back.”

Rolls-Royce FAQs

Rolls-Royce is now a subsidiary of BMW. Even though it is German-owned, Rolls-Royce continues to build in Britain.
Under BMW’s ownership, Rolls-Royce moved into a new factory in Goodwood, West Sussex.

For most of its history, Rolls-Royce cars have been made in either Derby or Crewe.

Bentley now has the factory in Crewe, while Rolls-Royce aero engines are still made in Derby.

You know the old saying about “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it”? That applies to a Rolls-Royce. Prices start from over £280,000.
A modern Rolls-Royce uses BMW technology, so the cars are broadly as reliable as a contemporary BMW. Just keep in mind that these are complex machines and cost a great deal to service and maintain.
