Nearly 160,000 vehicles were seized last year as uninsured driving hits a 17-year high. Here’s what this means for you.

Driving without insurance is a growing issue in the UK, with nearly 160,000 vehicles seized last year – the highest number in 17 years, according to enforcement data.

Around 300,000 vehicles are estimated to be driven uninsured every day, according to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB). The issue is thought to cost the UK economy roughly £1bn annually, once compensation, emergency services, healthcare, and lost productivity are taken into account.

The impact is direct and potentially life-changing, the MIB said. Someone is affected by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver every 20 minutes, and on average one person a day suffers serious, life-altering injuries.

Where is the problem worst?

Hotspot areas are spread across the UK, with several concentrated in Birmingham. Postcodes B25, B18, B66, B21 and B35 are among the worst affected.

In one police operation earlier this month, West Midlands Police took 16 vehicles off the road for being uninsured – including a Lamborghini.

Other high-risk areas include parts of Essex (RM19), Peterborough (PE1), Manchester (M18), Havering (RM1) and Belfast (BT17).

Hayley Sutcliffe, from the MIB, told the BBC: “It’s a diverse area so people coming into the country might not know the laws and the legislation of the Road Traffic Act.

“We need to raise awareness around when people need to have the correct level of cover of insurance.”

Why are people driving uninsured?

Cost is a major factor. Rising premiums are pushing some drivers to take illegal risks, while others simply don’t understand the rules – particularly those new to the UK.

Police also point to more serious behaviour. Uninsured drivers are more likely to be involved in other offences, including drink and drug driving, driving while disqualified, or using vehicles to conceal their identity, according to the MIB.

There’s also a rise in “fronting” – a type of insurance fraud where a more experienced driver falsely claims to be the main driver to reduce premiums. This can invalidate insurance entirely.

What happens if you’re caught?

Driving without insurance can lead to serious penalties.

If caught, you’ll typically receive a £300 fine and six penalty points on your licence (IN10). Police can also seize your vehicle on the spot, often using ANPR cameras to identify uninsured cars.

To get it back, you must show valid insurance, pay a release fee (often £150+), and cover storage charges. If it isn’t claimed – usually within 14 days – it may be sold or crushed, with around one in three unclaimed vehicles ultimately destroyed.

In more serious cases, the matter can go to court, where fines are unlimited and a driving ban may be imposed. A conviction also stays on your record and must be declared to insurers for five years, often pushing up future premiums significantly.

Top tips on car insurance

It’s important to make sure your car is always insured and that your policy is renewed on time. Here are five tips to keep in mind:

  1. Don’t risk driving uninsured – even once: Even a short trip without valid insurance can lead to penalties, seizure of your car, and long-term higher premiums.
  2. Always check your cover is valid: Make sure you’re correctly listed as the main driver and that your policy reflects how the car is actually used. “Fronting” can leave you uninsured.
  3. Shop around to reduce costs legally: Compare providers, adjust voluntary excess, and consider telematics (“black box”) policies if you’re a younger driver.
  4. Be cautious after an accident: If you’re hit by an uninsured driver, report it immediately to police and your insurer. Support is available through the MIB.
  5. Stay alert on the road: Drive defensively and keep a safe distance from erratic or unsafe drivers.
