This car has quietly set the standard for family hatchbacks for decades. Alternatives such as the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, and Honda Civic are often judged against it, while its overall polish and quality mean it also holds its own against more premium alternatives such as the BMW 1 Series or Audi A3.
Indeed, the Volkswagen Golf has become something of a default choice over the past 50 years. Sure, there are others that might offer something different or even better in certain areas, such as the Focus being better to drive and the Civic having a bigger boot, but this one remains consistently excellent and difficult to overlook.
All models come with full LED headlights, and some versions feature a connecting light bar and even an illuminated front badge. It’s still not a head-turner, but the overall look remains clean, modern, and uncontroversial – something that can’t be said for every alternative.
Inside, the cabin has a trademark solid feel. In response to widespread criticism, the touch-sensitive steering wheel buttons have been replaced with physical controls, making day-to-day operation much more intuitive.
