Car changing is a big deal
Mat Watson explains why you should consider the Volkswagen Tiguan as your next family runaround, and tells you how to get one for the best price.
The Volkswagen Tiguan is a brilliant family SUV, because it offers a little something for everyone. The kids will love the rear seat space, parents will appreciate the comfy suspension and practical boot, and the VW emblem is just posh enough to keep the badge snobs happy.
My only real gripe with this car is the price, because it’s quite a bit more expensive to buy than some alternatives such as the Jaecoo 7 and Skoda Karoq. However, if you want a Tiguan on your driveway for less, there are some great leasing offers through Carwow right now.
I’m going to walk you through three things I like about the Volkswagen Tiguan, as well as three drawbacks to consider before parting with your cash.
Three good things about the Volkswagen Tiguan
1. It’s really spacious inside

The Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the most spacious SUVs around, with roomy rear seats and 652-litre boot which puts the Kia Sportage’s 591 litres to shame. Global content director Iain Reid lived with a Tiguan for a few months, and he loved the sliding rear seats which free up space in the boot for his dog’s crate.
2. The interior feels posh
As you might expect from a Volkswagen, the Tiguan has a really premium interior. There’s loads of leatherette and soft-touch plastic, and everything feels really solid and robust. I also like the clever ambient lighting on the dashboard, which shines through a gloss black panel.
3. It’s really comfy

Driving the Volkswagen Tiguan is a very relaxing affair. The suspension does a great job of soaking up bumps in the road, especially if you opt for the adaptive dampers, and it’s also quiet and refined on the motorway. It may not be all that exciting, but it’s a great way to waft around in comfort.
Volkswagen Tiguan lease deals
The only main drawback to the Volkswagen Tiguan is the starting price, because at £38,000 it’s around £8,000 more expensive than a Kia Sportage.
However, there are some great lease deals available on the Volkswagen Tiguan which make it a much more affordable proposition. You can get a Match version with the 1.5-litre petrol engine for just £286.60 per month.
This is over four years with an upfront payment of £3,793, and a mileage limit of 5,000 per year. You can up this to 8,000 miles per year for an extra £15 per month.
The Match version comes with loads of equipment as standard, including:
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- Heated front seats and steering wheel
- 12.9-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring
- Adaptive cruise control
- Reversing camera
Three annoying things about the Volkswagen Tiguan
It may be a very good car, but the Volkswagen Tiguan isn’t perfect. Here are three annoying things.
1. Fiddly climate controls

The Volkswagen Tiguan doesn’t have any physical buttons for the climate control. Instead you have to use some annoying touch sliders and icons on the touchscreen, and this isn’t all that easy to do on the move.
2. Other SUVs look cooler

While it’s a pretty handsome thing, the Volkswagen Tiguan isn’t going to turn heads. In R-Line trim it does get some sporty additions which help it stand out, but a Peugeot 3008 is more exciting to look at.
3. Pointless centre dial

You get a little swivel wheel in the centre console which can control your driving mode or stereo volume, with a little screen on top to switch between the two. Why put a volume control there as well as on the infotainment screen itself and the steering wheel? Surely it would make more sense to use it for the fan speed, which is actually buried two taps deep in the menus.
But small annoyances aside, the Volkswagen Tiguan is still a great all-rounder for families. I recommend you check out the latest leasing deals to get the best value for your money.
