Car changing is a big deal
The latest version of this car is one of the ultimate family SUVs, but its immediate predecessor is almost as good – and you can save a bundle buying a used model through Carwow
If a model gets a Carwow rating of 9 out of 10, then that’s a resounding recommendation – buy it, as it’s one of the best cars of its type available. Well, that’s exactly the rating I gave to the previous-generation Skoda Kodiaq when I reviewed it – and it still comes out just as favourably when you’re looking into it as a used buy.
The new Kodiaq is a brilliant car with great engines (including a tax-friendly plug-in hybrid) and a superb interior. But the old car offers much of the same – it has space for all the family, it won’t cost the earth to run and it’s still cheaper to buy than the equivalent Volkswagen Tiguan.

Used Skoda Kodiaq deals: prices from £10,195
Looking through Carwow’s used cars for sale turns up dozens of Kodiaqs. You could go for one of the cheapest ones, with a petrol engine, but a car this size really demands diesel in my opinion – so my eyes were drawn to a 2018 model in a really desirable spec.
This car comes in at less than £16,000, which is more than a £20,000 saving on even the cheapest brand-new Kodiaq. But it comes with the most powerful diesel engine Skoda offered – a 2.0-litre four-cylinder making 190hp and mated up to an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.
This is one of those combinations that can do it all – it’s efficient on the motorway, easy to drive around town, and can even handle a bit of light off-roading.
Even better, it’s a ‘Scout’ model, so it comes really well-equipped with 19-inch wheels, LED lights, a huge sunroof, and leather and Alcantara upholstery with wood trim on the dash. And it’s a seven-seater – not all Kodiaqs were – so you get maximum flexibility.
The mileage is a bit high at just over 100,000, but these engines really do last if they’re looked after.

The Kodiaq was Skoda’s first proper SUV after the weirdo Yeti, and even though it was entirely conventional, it was a fantastic car. It’s one of those vehicles that just makes family life as easy as possible.
The third row seats are really useful, if a little tight, but fold them down and you have a cavernous boot. Occupants in the first and second rows have space to stretch out, and the interior is packed with clever features and neat design.
To drive, the Kodiaq does exactly what you’d hope for. It’s not sporty, but it’s fantastically comfortable, especially on a long journey. If you want a car that’ll have the kids napping before you’ve even pulled out of your cul-de-sac, this is it.

Kia Sorento
The last-generation Kia Sorento is large and in charge – it’s a big SUV with lots of room and lots of road presence. No wonder it’s popular with those who need a powerful tow car. It’s just as capable as the Kodiaq, but a little less comfortable and refined.
Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace
The Allspace is the seven-seat version of the Volkswagen Tiguan, and it’s mechanically very similar to the Skoda Kodiaq under the skin. You will pay a bit more for the equivalent VW, but it’s slightly posher inside.
Peugeot 5008
The Peugeot 5008 is cracking value for a car with lots of space and a gorgeous interior. The driving position won’t suit everyone, with its shrunken steering wheel and high-set dials, but the diesel engines are super-efficient.\
