Electric cars are expensive, right? Well actually, you can pick up a used Nissan Leaf for less than £7,000 these days and it could be an ideal family car.

The current Nissan Leaf feels like it’s been around for ages, and that’s because it has. I first drove the second-gen car all the way back in 2018, and I concluded that it was, pound-for-pound, the best electric car money could buy.

Times have moved on since then, and nowadays there are a lot of EVs which have much better range and more advanced tech. An all-new Nissan Leaf is also on the way, but the outgoing car still has plenty going for it.

Used Nissan Leaf deals: pick up this EV for under £7,000

You can still buy a new Nissan Leaf for around £28,500, and you can lease one from as little as £488 per month. As a new car, the Nissan Leaf doesn’t represent great value, though. It costs around the same as an MG4 or a Renault 5, but both of these cars offer better range and a more modern interior.

However, the Leaf is a bit of a bargain if you buy one second hand. I found a 2018 model with 55,000 miles on the clock for just £6,995, which is a steal for an EV with this level of standard equipment on board.

Used Nissan Leaf: specs and overview

This Nissan leaf has a 40kWh battery which gives it a respectable claimed range of 168 miles. In reality you’re more likely to get closer to 140 miles from it, but that’s plenty for most people’s commutes.

It also comes packed with tech as standard. You get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, sat nav, adaptive cruise control and DAB digital radio.

Charging is where the Leaf does fall short, because it only has the old-style CHAdeMO 50kW charger which is far less common than the widely-available CCS connector. It’ll also take a whopping 90 minutes to charge from 20-90%.

So you’ll want to have home charging if you’re planning to buy a Leaf, and it’s not ideal for regular long journeys. But if you’re after a cheap, comfortable, spacious and well-equipped electric car which is ideal for ferrying the kids around town or commuting to work, then you’ll want to check out a used Leaf.
