News editor Jamie Edkins has been getting hands-on with the new Polestar 4 SUV, a more practical version of the brand’s rear–windowless electric car.

This is the new Polestar 4 SUV, and I reckon this will end up being Polestar’s most-popular model. The standard car is currently its biggest-seller, and turning this swoopy saloon into a more practical family wagon can only increase its appeal.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

Let’s start with the most obvious change here: the rear end. More specifically, this car has a rear window. Big deal, right? Well the saloon doesn’t have one, making it pretty useless for dog owners and leaving you to rely on the rear-view camera to see behind you.

I found that system pretty hard to get used to in the saloon, so having a proper back window makes the SUV a winner in my book already. You do still have the rear-view camera though, which could be handy if you’ve got the boot stacked all the way up.

The boot itself is a respectable 530 litres, four litres more than the saloon and 10 litres up on the BMW iX3. The Porsche Macan EV does have a bit more space though.

Even the most elderly of dogs will have no trouble jumping over the Polestar’s low boot sill, and there’s some handy storage under the floor as well. You also get a 15-litre front boot for the charging cables.

Jumping into the back seats, there’s ample room for six-footers such as myself. Legroom is about the same as it is in the saloon, but you get more headroom thanks to the boxier roofline. You also still get reclining rear seats to get really comfortable.

Up front, the Polestar 4 SUV is exactly the same as the saloon – and that’s no bad thing. It feels really well-made, and the design is more special than in a Porsche Macan EV. I love the gold seatbelts and crystal details, and the central screen is one of the best in the business. It’s responsive, easy to use and the graphics are lovely.

Moving outside, design changes at the front are pretty much non-existent. It’s the rear three-quarters which makes this car stand out. I reckon it’s a cross between an SUV and an estate car, a bit like an Audi A6 Allroad. The big rear spoiler not only looks sporty, it also hides the wiper and rear-facing camera system.

Powering this car is the same 100kWh battery as the saloon, and you have the same choice of 272hp single- and 544hp dual-motor options. The former will do 391 miles on a charge, while the more powerful all-wheel drive car has 373 miles of range.

It’s actually a few miles more than the saloon version, but it’s some way off the BMW iX3’s 500 miles of range.

The Polestar 4 SUV is slightly more expensive than the iX3 as well. Prices start from £54,750, around £1,500 more than the BMW but £15,000 less than a Porsche Macan Electric. It’s also a couple of grand more than the Polestar 4 saloon.

The standard Polestar 4 is already a great luxury electric car. I drove one from Scotland back to London, and it’s one of the most relaxing long-distance cars I’ve experienced. Offering the same car in a more practical shell can only be a good thing, and I reckon they’ll sell like hot cakes.
