The UK’s best-selling electric car just got even better – new Renault 5 revealed 

I love the Renault 5, and I’m not alone. It was the best-selling electric car in the UK last month, with more than 1,800 of them finding homes. It’s easy to see why this charming little hatchback is so popular, and now it’s getting even better.

An updated version is coming later this year with some efficiency improvements which will make it even cheaper to run, as well as upgraded infotainment tech.

New Renault 5: battery and range upgrades

The Renault 5 is currently available in the UK with two battery options, and this will continue to be the case. The 40kWh Urban Range and 52kWh Comfort Range models will remain, but some aerodynamic tweaks mean they eke out a few more miles from a charge.

These changes include revised lower body panels and new door mirrors. The result is 196 miles of range from the smaller battery, an improvement of two miles, and a more substantial 15-mile increase for the 52kWh version. That car will now do 267 miles on a charge, bringing it within one mile of the new Aion UT. That car has a much larger battery though, so the Renault is more efficient.

The Urban Range car continues to use a 120hp front-mounted motor, and the Comfort Range still has 150hp. Europe also gets a 95hp version called the Five, which now gets the 37kWh battery from the Renault Twingo, but that car is unlikely to come to the UK.

New Renault 5: technology upgrades

Inside, the Renault 5 has been given some new tech. The interior itself looks exactly the same, but now it has a magnetic, cooled wireless charger to top up your phone more efficiently.

The Google-based infotainment system will also be getting the Gemini AI assistant. You can talk to it naturally, rather than having to remember specific voice commands, and you can ask it more complex questions. You could ask it to navigate you to your destination via a fast charger, for example.

Finally there’s the Smart driving modes, which switch between Eco, Comfort and Sport automatically depending on your driving style. This does mean Renault have removed the drive mode button from the steering wheel, but most people will just leave it up to the car anyway.

New Renault 5: styling changes

Renault hasn’t messed with the 5’s funky styling, which is a good thing. It’s just added a few new options to customise your car.

There’s a new colour called Flame Red, and you now have the option of gold wheels as well. Pair these with the dark blue paint and I reckon you’ve got a replica of the old Renault Clio Williams hot hatch from the 1990s.

Some new decal packs are also available, but there’s one other change I’m a bit gutted about. The current Renault 5 gets yellow interior upholstery on mid-spec versions, but this has been replaced with dark blue fabric. Boo.

New Renault 5: when can I buy one?

The new Renault 5 will be on display at the Paris Motor Show in October, but there’s no word on when it’ll go on sale in the UK just yet. Order books are likely to open in the new year, and the price may rise slightly as well. We don’t expect it to go above £22,000 though.
