The vast majority of vans have manual gearboxes, although increasingly large vans and electric vans are turning the tide towards two pedals. The best manual gearboxes in vans are usually on Ford products - the one in the Transit Custom is particularly nice to use.

Yes, and you may not have much choice in the matter, as there aren’t that many automatic vans on the market and there were even fewer a couple of years ago. Unless you do most of your driving in a crowded city, a manual van really isn’t a hardship.

Check that the manual gearbox operates smoothly and slots positively into every gear. Vans used as pool vehicles, or driven by lots of different operators, may suffer from some of them being rather unsympathetic on the clutch - so make sure it has plenty of life left in it and that the biting point isn’t too high.
