  • Sporty GTI version also coming

Volkswagen has just teased its latest electric car: the ID Polo. This is the first time VW has applied the ID branding to an existing model, and there will be a GTI version as well.

This prototype is covered in funky camouflage, but the wraps will be fully removed in early 2026. Prices are expected to start from less than £22,000.

New Volkswagen ID Polo design

This Volkswagen ID Polo prototype may be disguised for now, but you can already tell that it’ll look pretty much the same as the concept car from a few years ago.

Up front you have a stubby, sloped bonnet and sleek headlights which look similar to the ones found on the larger Volkswagen ID7. The light-up VW badge is also becoming a staple for the brand, with it appearing on the new T-Roc and Tiguan.

There’s not much to report down the side, apart from the hidden rear door handles. At the rear you have a sporty-looking roof spoiler and a chunky full-width light bar, just like the ID 2all concept.

A GTI version will also be joining the ID Polo range, and it has a few subtle design changes to make it look more sporty.

At the front you have a revised bumper with a deeper air intake at the bottom, and the alloy wheels are larger. The rear diffuser is also much more aggressive-looking, and the spoiler is bigger as well.

There are no pictures of the interior just yet, but given that the exterior is so similar to the concept, it would be safe to assume that the interior will carry over as well. It has a pretty minimalist design, with a big screen sitting proudly atop the dashboard.

New Volkswagen ID Polo motors, batteries and range

The final stats for this car haven’t been announced just yet, but the ID 2all concept had up to 280 miles of range. There’s nothing to suggest that the final car won’t also hit this figure, which is around 30 miles more than a Renault 5 can manage.

It’ll be powered by a single electric motor on the front axle, which should produce 226hp. Volkswagen also says that it’ll do 0-60mph in under 7.0 seconds.

But what about the GTI? Well it’ll have more power, as you’d expect, but it’s still got a front-mounted single electric motor. Around 320hp could be possible, which would be the same as the Volkswagen ID3 GTX.

That added power may bring the 0-60mph time down to around 6.0 seconds, but it’s also likely to reduce the range. Expect this car to do around 250 miles on a charge.

When can I buy the new Volkswagen ID Polo?

The standard Volkswagen ID Polo will go on sale in early 2026, but you may have to wait until the end of next year before the GTI version hits the streets.

Final pricing hasn’t been revealed just yet, but when the ID 2all concept was revealed a few years ago Volkswagen said it would cost less than £22,000. The GTI will be more expensive, but it could still sneak in under £30,000.
