Volkswagen Polo (2014-2017) interior
The Polo’s interior is comfortable, the boot is usefully shaped, and the optional smartphone mirroring works really well – but the dashboard looks a bit drab and some of the plastics feel cheap
Style
The Polo’s dashboard looks high quality and its squishy plastics feel plush. However, the quality feeling ends at the dashboard, and plastics used elsewhere in the car feel hard and cheap – the tops of the doors and the centre console are the main offenders. That said, this is a common flaw in most small cars, and at least the Polo’s steering wheel and gearknob are trimmed in leather on Match Edition models and above, and feel lovely to hold. It’s just worth noting that the cheaper Vauxhall Corsa almost matches the Polo for style and quality.
The Polo’s interior is easy to use and all the buttons are placed just where you’d expect them to be, and in day-to-day life it won’t annoy you. The Polo also has some typical Volkswagen quality touches that make you feel good, such as the way the glovebox opens slowly under its own weight, and the fact that the doors shut with a reassuring thud.
You don’t need to pay extra for sat-nav when the smartphone mirroring systems work so well on the Polo’s touchscreen

Infotainment
Watch our Volkswagen Polo interior and infotainment video review
Entry level S models get a five-inch colour touchscreen, DAB digital radio, Bluetooth and a basic six-speaker speaker system that sounds a bit tinny. Step up to the popular Match Edition version and you get a bigger 6.5-inch touchscreen. If you want the Polo with the best sound system then get the Beats model which comes with a subwoofer and more speakers for a bassier, louder sound.
The infotainment system on all models is easy to use, and the touchscreen reacts quickly to your swipes and touches. Match Edition and Beats models get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring systems as standard, and they’re a £130 option on other models. You can’t add the systems to entry-level S models though, which is a shame because they let you use your smartphone’s sat-nav and media apps on the Polo’s infotainment screen, and you’ll find both systems more user-friendly than the £700 optional VW sat-nav.
