Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace (2016-2020) interior

The VW Tiguan’s interior is all very easy to use and the infotainment system is nice and intuitive, but alternatives have much more interesting cabins with greater scope for personalisation.

Style

Every VW Tiguan Allspace comes with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It sits nestled in the dashboard between a set of shortcut keys and a physical volume knob, which is a nice easy-to-use touch.

The system’s menus are pretty easy to navigate through and the screen responds quickly to your inputs so it’s pretty easy to use as you drive along. Even entry-level Match models come with sat-nav as standard, and the large touchscreen makes it pretty easy to enter a postcode using the on-screen keyboard. The map screens are nice and clear and you can easily swipe across to preview your route just like using your phone.

Speaking of which, you can connect your phone using the Tiguan Allspace’s standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring features if you’d rather use your favourite navigation apps through the car’s screen instead.

These features are easy to set up and also let you access streaming apps such as Spotify through the VW Tiguan Allspace’s touch screen and play music through the car’s stereo. You can upgrade the standard stereo to a punchier Dynaudio unit if you’re serious about sound quality, but it’s a rather expensive optional extra – even in high-spec models.

There’s also the option to upgrade the standard 8-inch screen to a larger 9.2-inch unit with built-in voice commands and gesture control, although these features aren’t quite as easy as using the standard shortcut buttons on the VW Tiguan Allspace’s smaller 8-inch infotainment display.

A more worthwhile upgrade is the 10-inch digital driver’s display that comes as standard in SEL and R-Line Tech models. This replaces the VW Tiguan Allspace’s standard analogue dials with a configurable screen that can display dial graphics or widescreen sat-nav directions, right in your eye line. It’s a doddle to read and it’s simple to find exactly the information you’re looking for using the handy scroll-wheel controls on the steering wheel.
