About Volvo

Volvo is one of the most famous car brands in the world, having been making — mostly upright and sensible — cars in Gothenburg, in Sweden, since the 1920s. 

These days it’s a sophisticated multi-national car maker, still based in Sweden but backed by Chinese billions (Volvo is owned by the huge Geely group, along with Polestar, Lotus, and Proton) and it builds cars on three continents.

Best known for its 1970s and 1980s 245 GL Estate — a car with the style of a Lego brick, but hugely practical and popular — Volvo is the company that sells on safety, having invented the three-point seatbelt and regularly getting the best results from the Euro NCAP crash tests.

More recently, it’s become a much more luxurious brand, taking on the likes of BMW and Mercedes, and while Volvo is increasingly focusing on electric cars — the EX30, EX40, and EX90 for instance — you can also buy more sensible plug-in hybrid models.
