It may have been around for a while, but the Volvo XC40 is still a great buy if you’re after something both sensible and stylish.
It’s hard to believe that the current Volvo XC40 has been around for nearly eight years, because it’s still a really good-looking SUV. If you’re after something comfy, spacious and safe for the family, here’s why you should look at an XC40.
Why the Volvo XC40 is a great buy
The Volvo XC40 was a stylish car when it was launched in 2018, and it still is now thanks to some design tweaks over the years to keep it looking fresh. Your neighbors will still be green with envy when you park this on your driveway.
It’s more than just a pretty face though, the XC40 also has loads of rear legroom and plenty of cabin storage. You can even get a removable rubbish bin for the centre console. The boot is a good size as well, even if it’s not quite as commodious as the BMW X1.
Out on the road the XC40 is nice and relaxed. The focus here is on comfort over sportiness; it’s soft and forgiving over bumps, and it’s refined on the motorway.

BMW X1: more fun to drive
The XC40 is set up for comfort, but if you want to have fun on a twisty road then the BMW X1 is a better choice. It’s more nimble through the bends while still being comfortable to live with.
Lexus LBX: more economical
The Lexus LBX uses Toyota’s hugely efficient 1.5-litre hybrid engine, so you’ll get 63mpg from it as opposed to the Volvo’s 43mpg. The Lexus is also comfy to drive, but it’s not as roomy inside as the XC40.
