Mat’s Car of the Day: a used Audi RS4 Avant could be yours for the same price as a Jaecoo 7
Car changing is a big deal
Mat Watson recently reviewed the new Audi RS5, and it made him think about how much he loved his old RS4 Avant. A quick look at some used examples has revealed some very tempting deals.
The new Audi RS5 is an impressive bit of kit, but it’s hamstrung by one thing: weight. Emissions regulations necessitated a plug-in hybrid system, and as a result it weighs almost 2.4 tonnes.
That’s around half a tonne heavier than my old daily driver, an Audi RS4 Avant, and that means it’s not as much fun to drive. Reminiscing on my time with that car prompted me to check out used prices, and there are some bargains out there.

Used Audi RS4 Avant prices and deals
The new Audi RS5 starts from around £90,000, but I’ve found a RS4 Avant which costs almost a third of that.
This 2018 example has just over 58,000 miles on the clock, and it can be yours for £35,000. That’s the same as a plug-in hybrid Jaecoo 7, but instead of a sensible SUV this is a 450hp super estate which does 0-60mph in just 4.0 seconds.
Here are a few reasons I’d buy a used Audi RS4 Avant.
Three things I love about the Audi RS4 Avant
1. It’s great to drive
The Audi RS4 Avant strikes the ideal balance between comfort and handling. When you’re just pootling around it’s comfortable and refined, more so than a BMW M3, but it’s also really agile and fun through the corners. The new RS5’s extra weight makes it less forgiving over bumps, and it’s not quite as nimble either.
2. It’s really practical
Audi has been making fast estate cars for years, so it knows a thing or two about combining practicality and performance. The boot is more than big enough for a chunky labrador, and there’s plenty of space in the back for bulky rear-facing child seats. Just remember the kids are back there before you go hooning down country lanes.
3. The interior is beautifully built
The RS4’s interior is one of the best in the business. Everything feels super-solid and high-quality, and there’s plenty of physical switchgear which makes things easy to operate on the move. I also prefer the smaller screen in this car to the massive expanse of displays you get in the new RS5.
Three annoying things about the Audi RS4 Avant
Before you go buying an Audi RS4 Avant, here are a few things to consider.
1. It’s expensive to run
The 2.9-litre V6 in this car is rather thirsty. Audi says it’ll return around 30mpg, but in reality you’ll be lucky to get more than 20mpg. Servicing will also be pricey, as will insurance, and being eight years old you can expect some repair bills.
2. A BMW M3 is more fun to drive
The Audi RS4 is brilliant on a twisty road, but if you’re after the most fun car in this class then you have to get the BMW M3. It’s just a bit more lively than the Audi thanks to its rear-wheel drive bias.
3. The engine doesn’t sound great
The RS4’s V6 engine makes a nice enough noise, but it’s a bit muted for my tastes. If you want something with a shouty exhaust note, the 4.0-litre V8 engine in the previous-generation Mercedes-AMG C63 is the car to buy.
