About GWM

GWM stands for Great Wall Motors - which, if you hadn’t guessed, is a Chinese car manufacturer. It’s one of the country’s biggest car making conglomerates, founded in 1984 - and unlike some Chinese manufacturers, is privately owned rather than state-funded.

GWM has had rather a troubled beginning in the UK market. Initially the brand was called ORA - actually a GWM sub-brand - and sold the confusingly named Funky Cat electric car. It has since been rebranded to GWM, with Ora relegated to a model name in the GWM Ora 03.

The only other model currently available is the GWM Haval Jolion Pro, a small hybrid SUV - but GWM can potentially call on a huge number of other models from its Chinese brands, such as other electric cars from the Ora stable, posh SUVs with coffee-themed names from its Wey brand, or tough-looking off-roaders under the Tank name.

Cars sold by GWM often have tempting prices, eye-catching styling and lots of standard equipment. But the Ora 03 in particular is somewhat substandard with a poor real-world range and driving and infotainment systems that haven’t quite caught up with what the best Chinese or European brands offer.

What our car expert says

“GWM has a whole load of cool-looking cars in China it could introduce in the UK, but the ones it’s brought over so far haven’t really resonated with British buyers.”

GWM FAQs

GWM stands for Great Wall Motors, referring to the Great Wall of China. It began as an agricultural vehicle repair workshop in 1976 but started developing passenger cars in 1990.
GWM builds its own vehicles in factories across China, and it also has assembly plants in Ecuador, Malaysia, Tunisia, Bulgaria, Russia and Thailand.
Older GWM pickup trucks did have engines based on Toyota designs, but more recent models have used GWM’s own engines.
GWM cars offer excellent value but aren’t as appealing as some other Chinese brands, or more established European, Japanese or Korean alternatives. A lack of finesse to the infotainment and driver assistance systems make them frustrating to live with.
