Is the Mini Electric Convertible a good car?

Inflation being what it is, we’re all getting used to high prices. But even if your credit card took a beating the last time you hit the high street, the price of the new Mini Electric Convertible could still come as a shock: £52,500. It’s the designer handbag of the electric car world, very much about the look over any sort of practicality.

Reach to the bottom of some very deep pockets, or bag, and you’ll be able to pick up one of just 199 UK cars, out of a Europe-wide production run of 999.

If the price is a surprise, the decision to make an electric version of the Mini Convertible isn’t. Since the electric hatchback was introduced three years ago, it has come to account for one in five Minis sold across Europe. Making electric versions of other Mini models is a no-brainer.

Under the skin, the limited-run Mini uses the same 184hp motor and 32.6kWh battery as the hatch. Performance is nippy enough, with a 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds. Range is disappointing, though, at just 124 miles in the official WLTP tests.

An electric Mini Convertible is an enticing concept, but it's a lot of money for a car with a pretty limited range

Mini would argue that the car isn’t intended for high-mileage drivers, and that a bigger, heavier battery would hurt performance and handling. A Mini should be light and agile, not heavy and sluggish. Even so, we’re struggling to think of another £50k EV with such a limited range.

The Mini Electric Convertible is available in one specification, with a choice of two exterior colours: Enigmatic Black or White Silver. The door handles, side scuttles and light surrounds are finished in Resolute Bronze, and the Mini logo and model lettering are in Piano Black.

Standard kit includes 17-inch alloys in a design that’s unique to this edition, along with heated seats, a multifunction heated steering wheel, and a head-up display. Active cruise control should help make long journeys more relaxing, aside from the urgent need to find somewhere to charge. Nipping around town or enjoying country roads will play more to the Mini Electric Convertible’s strengths.
