Car changing is a big deal
Comfort is a top priority for many drivers. Based on the latest Driver Power owner satisfaction survey, these are the cars owners rate as the most comfortable.
From long road trips to a simple hop to the supermarket, you want your car to be comfortable for you, your family and your friends. Part of that comfort comes from how your car drives on the road, whether you’re cruising along motorways or navigating pothole-ridden country lanes.
But which cars are the most comfortable? Based on feedback from more than 100,000 UK motorists, the latest Driver Power survey reveals the top 10 cars owners rate highest for ride quality and smoothness.

1. Volvo XC40
Claiming the top spot is the Volvo XC40. It’s a sophisticated SUV that’s very comfortable on the road and has plenty of room for passengers. However, it has an ageing interior design and a fiddly infotainment system, and some trims aren’t up to scratch either.
Owners particularly loved the XC40 for its driving quality. One respondent said they liked it for its “comfortable, smooth and quiet ride”, while another described it as “excellent, spacious and comfortable”.
2. Peugeot 308
Taking silver is the Peugeot 308. We think this is one of the most eye-catching hatchbacks currently on sale, and it’s impressively comfortable on a long drive. However, we do think it has a slightly hesitant automatic gearbox, and its entry-level cars can get a little pricey.
Owners were impressed by the 308’s overall package, highlighting its “style, interior, comfortable cabin, great technology and driving position”. Another owner praised its “lovely interior and exterior design, small steering wheel, reliable, comfortable” driving experience.
3. BMW 2 Series
Rounding out the podium is the BMW 2 Series. This coupe is great fun to drive and has a high-quality interior. Comfort is good, but the sports suspension means there’s definitely a bit more jiggling over bumps than you’d get in a less sporty model. It also has poor rear-seat space, which may not be particularly comfortable for taller passengers.
Owners were impressed by its overall quality, though. One owner said: “I like the sporty styling and the engine makes a great sound. The interior is also very luxurious,” while another stated that it’s “so comfortable to drive and its safety features are useful”.
4. Mazda CX-30
This small SUV may have missed out on a top-three spot, but it still won over its owners when it comes to comfort. The Mazda CX-30 has stylish looks and is great fun to drive for a small SUV. However, rear passenger space isn’t great, while its boot can’t match the best small SUVs.
Owners praised its quality, comfort and equipment. One said: “It’s well equipped with loads of safety features. It’s also comfortable on both short and long journeys.” Another said they “like the space and comfort, plus responsive handling”.
5. Hyundai Tucson
Up next is the Hyundai Tucson. This family car has excellent interior quality and a huge boot. However, the styling won’t be to everyone’s taste and the rear seats are an awkward shape.
That said, owners praised the Tucson for its comfort. One respondent said: “It’s comfortable to drive with lots of room in the back,” while another commented: “Very well equipped and comfortable, and easy to drive.” A third owner summed it up simply: “It’s an excellent choice for space and comfort.”
6. Peugeot 3008
This family SUV was also rated highly for its comfort. The Peugeot 3008 has a striking design, efficient hybrid engines and a great-quality interior. However, we find the rear seats a little cramped, while the infotainment system can be fiddly to use.
Respondents in the Driver Power survey also praised it for its comfort. One owner said, “It’s super comfortable for long journeys and very spacious,” while another described it as “an amazing car to own”, adding that it’s “smooth and silent”.
7. Tesla Model 3
Up next is the Tesla Model 3. This electric saloon is a comfortable choice, with plenty of rear legroom and a spacious, minimalist cabin. Just make sure you get the Premium model for the best comfort, because it gets a more sophisticated suspension setup than the standard car.
Owners were full of praise for the car. One said: “As a Performance model, it’s ridiculously fast! Very reliable and cheap to run.” Another described it as “easy to charge, maintain and drive, with low running costs.”
8. Peugeot 2008
We have another Peugeot in our midst. The 2008 is the smaller sibling to the 3008 that has a stylish exterior design. It’s fun to drive and cheap to run too. However, adults might find it a little cramped in the back, while its sluggish automatic gearbox could take some of the shine off the driving experience.
That didn’t stop owners from praising it, though. One owner described it as a “great SUV that drives well and is economical to run”, while another said it “has excellent fuel economy, drives well, and is very comfortable.”
9. Toyota Aygo X
Also in the top 10 is the Toyota Aygo X. This impressively efficient hatchback is great to drive around town and feels incredibly refined on the motorway. However, there’s not much storage in the cabin, and the boot is quite small too.
Driver Power survey respondents said efficiency was one of the Aygo X’s biggest strengths, alongside its comfort. One owner said it’s “reliable and good on fuel”, while another praised its “great mpg, comfortable seats, and easy-to-drive nature”.
10. Vauxhall Mokka
Finally, we have the Vauxhall Mokka. This small and stylish SUV is well equipped and a piece of cake to drive around town, while also making for a comfortable motorway cruiser. That said, we find the Mokka far from riveting on a country lane, and it has a smaller boot than some alternatives.
Respondents to the Driver Power survey praised it for its comfort, with one owner saying: “It’s a good-looking car, and is very comfortable for both drivers and passengers.” Another also liked it for its “style and economy”, as well as being “nice to drive”.
