Electric car choice doubles as UK drivers embrace growing range of models

The number of fully electric cars available in the UK has doubled in three years, while dealerships report rising interest in EVs at every stage of the buying journey.
The number of electric cars available to UK buyers has doubled in just three years, with a new electric model arriving roughly every fortnight since 2023, according to new data.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says 85 new electric car models have entered the market during that time, taking the total to 171.
You can now choose from 385 new car models across more than 60 brands, with electric options ranging from small city cars and family hatchbacks to SUVs and sports cars.
Mike Hawes, SMMT’s chief executive, said: “Britain’s new car market has never offered so much choice, with a new electric model arriving every fortnight and zero emission motoring now available in every shape and size of vehicle.”

Most new EVs can travel more than 300 miles on a single charge on average. That’s more than twice the 127 miles driven by the typical UK motorist in a week, according to the Department of Transport (DfT), making them more appealing.
The growing choice comes as dealerships report increasing demand. Research from Close Brothers Motor Finance found that 86% of dealers had seen more EV enquiries over the past year, while 84% reported an increase in actual EV purchases.
However, charging infrastructure and concerns over future car values remain the biggest concerns raised by prospective buyers, each cited by 34% of dealers. Upfront costs and range anxiety were each highlighted by 30%.
The SMMT says the rapid expansion in electric models reflects continued manufacturer investment in batteries, technology and new vehicle platforms.
“For those still facing barriers or uncertainty, the huge range of hybrid and lower emission models means drivers can still make drastic cuts to their carbon footprint, keeping the UK firmly on the road to net zero,” Hawes concluded.
What new electric cars can you buy?
Since there’s so much choice, we’ve narrowed down five new electric cars for you to consider.
Cupra Raval
First up, we have the Cupra Raval. This head-turning electric hatchback gives you up to 276 miles of range, a hugely spacious cabin, and comes well-equipped. That said, we do think it could be more comfortable in town and its rear visibility isn’t great.
You can currently save £4,675 on a range-topping Extreme version through Carwow, at the time of writing. Here, you get a self-parking function, a premium audio system with 12 speakers including a subwoofer, and wireless phone charging. Do note, though, that this version comes with up to 239 miles of range as it’s tuned for performance rather than maximum efficiency.
Nissan Leaf
We’d also recommend the Nissan Leaf. This small electric SUV has a really handsome interior, and is really comfortable to drive. Not to mention it has a great electric range of up to 386 miles. However, you will find alternatives that have bigger boots and the rear seats are a bit tight.

Audi A6 Avant e-tron
Next up, we have the Audi A6 Avant e-tron. It’s a comfortable, family-friendly estate car that’s not only fantastic to drive, but also comes with a massive range of up to 465 miles. The downsides are that it’s not as practical as alternatives and it has a very screen-heavy cabin. It also can get very expensive.
There’s a stellar deal on the Audi A6 Avant e-tron. You can currently get a whopping £16,023 off the S6 Vorsprung version, which comes with up to 384 miles of range and features such as a 3D 360-degree surround camera, swerve assist and front turn assist, a heat pump, ventilated front seats, and air suspension.
Geely EX5
This Chinese electric SUV is also worth a look. The Geely EX5 has a plush interior with high-quality materials, very roomy back seats, and comes loaded with kit. It’s just a shame that it only has a limited range and a smaller boot than alternatives.
If range isn’t an issue, you can get an Ultra EX5 with up to £5,458 off through Carwow, at the time of writing. This top-specced version comes with 280 miles of range and features such as a 750kg towing capacity, 360-degree topview surround parking vision, and wireless phone charging.
Kia EV4
Last up is a comfortable and roomy electric hatchback: the Kia EV4. This small car is very comfortable, you get miles of rear legroom, and more range than alternatives. However, the cabin storage isn’t great and it has a driving position that won’t suit everyone.
If you’re looking for an EV that’s spacious with decent range, then check out this deal. At the time of writing, you can get £7,716 off the EV4’s Motion trim. This version comes with the top range of 388 miles. You also get to enjoy features such as a Harmon Kardon sound system, cloth and leatherette interior trim, heated rear seats, 360-degree cameras and an electric driver’s seat.
