The all-new Nissan Micra EV, Nissan’s electric take on the Renault 5, has been revealed. This funky small electric car has up to 250 miles of range and will hit UK roads from January 2026, with orders opening in September.
Nissan Micra Design
Being so closely related to Renault 5 meant that Nissan designers weren’t exactly starting with a blank piece of paper with regards to the Micra’s looks, but they have tried to differentiate the car from its retro French counterpart.
“It’s not a retro design”, insists Nissan Senior Design Manager Bert Dehaes. “It has timeless qualities rather than a fashion statement.”
That’s not a dig at Renault. “Renault is celebrating the Renault 5,” he says. “This celebrates Micra.”

It was the bubble headlights that perhaps made the third generation Micra – built between 2002 and 2010 – the most recognisable of them all. And in this sixth-generation model, the headlights again dominate the car’s looks. Large daytime running lights loop around thin rectangular headlights to give it a distinctive face.
“The headlights make you smile,” says Dehaes. Indeed, the lights give you a ‘welcome wink’ when you turn on the car.

There’s no fake grille at the front – just a large Nissan logo – but down the side there is fake-looking cladding at the bottom of the doors that’s supposed to give the Micra a SUV vibe.

The in-yer-face light design is toned-down a little at the rear, but still has enough character to make the back of the car easy to spot in the supermarket carpark.
Nissan Micra interior
The differences between the Nissan Micra and the Renault 5 are more subtle inside the car. You do have the options of three different interior colour themes – a black, blue or light grey.

Like the Renault 5, the 10-inch driver’s display and 10-inch infotainment screen are integrated into a single housing. And like the R5, the Micra has Google Maps and Google Assistant built-in. But you have to opt for the mid-spec car to get this. Entry-level cars get a smaller driver’s display. The air-con controls are, thankfully, physical buttons underneath the air vents.

Nissan has tried to draw on its Japanese culture with outlines of Mount Fuji in the centre console, while the door of the charging port has kanji characters for the numbers two and three. Nissan sounds like the numbers 2 (ni) and 3 (san) in Japanese.
Boot capacity is OK at 326 litres – that’s more than you get in a Citroen eC3 but less than in a Hyundai Inster – and there are more Mount Fuji graphics here to reinforce that honestly, really, this absolutely isn’t a Renault 5.

Nissan Micra batteries and range
There are two battery options available in the Micra. First up is the 40kWh model with 120hp. This is good for around 190-miles range. Then there’s a 52kWh battery with 150hp which should give you nearer to 250 miles of range. A heat pump, which helps with efficiency in cold weather, comes as standard.
When can I buy the new Nissan Micra?
Nissan won’t confirm prices yet so we have to look at what’s going on Renault to get an indication of how much the new Micra will cost. The entry-level Renault 5 costs from £22,295. However, to get the decent infotainment system and longer-range version, Renault prices that version at £26,995. A similarly powered and equipped Micra will be in those ballparks too.
You’ll be able to order your new Micra from September, with deliveries starting in January 2026.

Nissan Micra Nismo?
Could a sporty Nissan Micra Nismo be on the cards? The Nissan Ariya Nismo shows that the brand wants to make sporty versions of its electric cars. And the Micra has the ingredients to have a sporty Nismo version – the standard car already has advanced multi-link rear suspension and Alpine has its sporty take on the Renault 5, with the 220hp A290.
And new Nissan GB boss James Taylor isn’t opposed to the idea of a Micra Nismo. “I’ve just driven the new Ariya Nismo and if you can get some of those dynamics into Micra then it has all got to help the brand.”
“But I think you would have to do it properly. If you are going to do it and call it Nismo it has to be authentic.”
