Nissan Micra Review & Prices

The Nissan Micra is an electric car with decent range for the price, but the Renault 5 does the same thing with more badge appeal

Is the Nissan Micra a good car?

The Nissan Micra is back, and this time it’s an electric car with funky styling and impressive range. However, it’s near enough identical to the Renault 5 on which it is based, and that car looks far cooler.

It’s a bit like buying electronics from Amazon – whichever memory stick you end up buying, it’s probably identical to the other six in your search results, just with a different badge on the front.

So if you’re considering the Micra it’s also worth taking a look at the Renault 5, as well as other small EVs such as the Ford Puma Gen-E, Hyundai Inster, Citroen e-C3 and Vauxhall Corsa Electric.

Nissan Micra: electric range, battery and charging data

Range: 198 miles / 260 miles
Efficiency: TBC
Battery size: 40kWh / 52kWh
Max charge speed: 80kW / 100kW
Charge time AC: TBC
Charge time DC: 30 mins, 15-80%
Charge port location: Front left
Power outputs: 121hp / 148hp

So the Renault looks cooler, but there’s nothing wrong with the way the Nissan looks in isolation. Its diminutive dimensions work well with the chunky wheel arches, and the headlights are a narrow block within a circular daytime running light design that makes the car look like it’s squinting aggressively.

Inside it’s, well, it’s a Renault 5. While the exterior has its own character the interior is pretty much identical to its French cousin, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing because it’s a great place to be. You get a multi-layered dashboard and a twin-screen setup that wraps around you, and the Google software is among the best in-car tech to use. The downside is that it appears to be lacking cup holders like the Renault, too.

I like that the Nissan Micra can go a bit further on a charge than most alternatives

You can expect rear seat space to be tight, though the 326-litre boot – you guessed it, identical to the Renault 5 – is roomier than what you get in the Vauxhall Corsa Electric and Citroen e-C3, though it’s nothing on the massive Ford Puma Gen-E boot.

You get a choice of two batteries, and range figures are pretty good. The smaller battery goes up to 198 miles in official tests, compared with 260 miles in the larger one, which is a bit more than you get in similarly priced versions of alternatives. Fast charging from 15-80% should take about 30 minutes.

We’ll update this review once we’ve been behind the wheel, but in the meantime you can get a great price with Carwow’s Nissan Micra deals and Micra lease deals. You can also browse used Nissans, and when it’s time to sell your current car, Carwow can help with that, too.

The Nissan Micra represents great value, and at the time of writing it’s eligible for the electric car grant, which drops its price further – from about £21,500 for the smaller battery and £25,500 for the larger one.

That said, most alternatives are eligible for the grant, too. The Citroen e-C3, Vauxhall Corsa and Renault 5 all get the £1,500 discount, but it’s the Ford Puma Gen-E that’s particularly tempting because you currently get £3,750 off.

There are three Micra trims to choose from, with the entry-level Engage only offered with the smaller battery. Standard kit includes 18-inch alloy wheels, the twin-screen infotainment setup and a heat pump to help your range in cold weather. Mid-spec Advance models are offered with both batteries and add a bigger instrument screen, adaptive cruise control and a reversing camera. Top-of-the-range Evolve versions have the big battery and a Harman Kardon sound system, heated front seats and steering wheel and a one-pedal mode.
