Peugeot CEO Alain Favey has just confirmed that a facelifted version of the 308 is being revealed in August, but could there be a GTi version coming as well?

The Peugeot 308 will be getting an update in a few weeks time, the brand’s CEO Alain Favey has confirmed. You can expect to see some styling tweaks and new technology when it’s revealed at the end of August.

We also asked Favey about a potential return of the 308 GTi – which he didn’t rule out, telling Carwow that there will be other new performance models in the future following the e-208 GTi.

New Peugeot 308 GTi: is it happening?

Potentially, but perhaps not for a while. Peugeot has only just launched the new e-208 GTi, so you can expect a bit of a wait before you see the next performance model from this French brand.

But Favey, Peugeot’s CEO, is confident that the GTi badge will appear on other models in the future. He told us: “A GTi has to be something really special, and what I really don’t want to do is put the GTi badge on something that is not at the height of what our customers expect, which is a top driving experience in terms of sportiness.

“The 208 GTi has been developed by our Peugeot Sport engineers, and I can promise you it will be the absolute top in terms of tech and road holding. We need to get to that kind of level to be at the level that GTi owners expect.

“We still need a bit of work on other models, but I promise you that I’m quite confident that there will be other models of GTi in the future.”

So it looks like Peugeot’s GTi reboot won’t stop with the new e-208, and while it hasn’t confirmed that the 308 is next it would be the most logical model to get the GTi treatment.

The old 308 had a 1.6-litre petrol engine with 270hp

But what would a new 308 GTi look like? Well it would likely be electric, just like the e-208 GTi. When asked about potential petrol-engined GTi cars, Favey told us: “We as a brand are committing clearly to develop the GTi of the future, and that’s what we’re trying to do with the 208, not necessarily recreating the standards of 40 or 50 years ago.

Stellantis, Peugeot’s parent company, already has a handful of hot electric SUVs on offer which are great fun to drive: The Abarth 600e and the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce. The e-208 GTi also shares parts with these cars, so it’s likely that any future GTi cars would use similar technology.

This would mean a 280hp electric motor powering the front wheels, as well as a clever differential on the front which helps make the car more agile around the corners.

The standard 308 is getting an update in August

You’ll have to wait a while to see if the new Peugeot 308 GTi becomes a reality. The updated version of the standard car is being revealed in late August, and with the e-208 GTi not even on the road yet you’re unlikely to see another new car wearing this prestigious performance badge until well into 2026.
