Tesla to launch a new six-seat Model Y, but you probably won’t be able to buy one

This is a new, larger Tesla Model Y with six seats, and we expect it to be called the Model Y L. Documents filed with the Chinese government show pictures of this new car, but it may not make it to our shores.

Tesla is launching a larger version of the Model Y, and it has six seats. Documents from the Chinese government show that it looks pretty similar to the standard car, albeit with a slightly more bulbous side profile.
It’s not clear at this point whether this car will be sold outside of China, however there was a seven-seat version of the previous Model Y in the UK so a more versatile model could still be on the cards.

New Tesla Model Y L: design and interior
These patent images from the Chinese government show that this larger Tesla Model Y looks very similar to the standard car from most angles. It has the same slim light bar at the front and the same funky taillights, but the side profile looks slightly different.
The roofline appears to be higher, which will be to increase headroom for people in the third row, and it’s slightly longer as well to accommodate the extra pair of seats.
Inside, you can expect to see the same minimalist dashboard layout as the standard model Y, but rumours suggest that this will be a six seater – so you’ll get a pair of chairs in the middle row rather than a bench seat.
This interior layout is popular in China, where it’s more common to be driven in the back of your car rather than driving it yourself. If a larger, more practical version of the Model Y came to the UK then it would most likely have seven seats.
New Tesla Model Y L: motors and performance
It seems as though this new Model Y L will get more than just more interior space, reports from Chinese sources suggest that it’ll be more powerful as well.
A report from Car News China says it’ll have a dual-motor setup with all-wheel drive and 456hp, 81hp more than the most powerful Model Y we currently get in the UK. That’s also about the right amount of power for a Tesla Model Y Performance, so perhaps that car will get this setup when it comes along.
New Tesla Model Y L: will I be able to buy one?
The Tesla Model Y L is exclusive to China for now, and there’s no word on whether this car will be sold outside of that market. A seven-seat version of this electric SUV isn’t beyond the realms of possibility in the UK though, after all we did have one before it was facelifted earlier this year.
