The 7 best Toyota Urban Cruiser alternatives if you want a small electric car now
June 10, 2025 by Jamie Edkins

Car changing is a big deal
The Toyota Urban Cruiser is still a few months away from hitting UK roads, so if you’re looking for a small, affordable electric car which is available now here are seven of the best.
This is the new Toyota Urban Cruiser, and it’s the brand’s second electric car after the bZ4X went on sale a few years ago. We had a look around this car earlier in the year, and it looks as though it’ll be a solid small EV for families.

But it’s going to be a while before we see the Urban Cruiser on UK roads, so what should you buy if you’re after a small, affordable electric car now? Here are seven great cars to consider.
And remember, you can compare the latest electric cars and get great deals through Carwow, whether you’re looking to buy cash, lease or find a used car. You can also sell your current car quickly and for a fair price.
The best Toyota Urban Cruiser alternatives in 2025 are:
- Kia EV3
- Skoda Elroq
- Volvo EX30
- Hyundai Inster
- Cupra Born
- MG4
- Renault Megane E-Tech
1. Kia EV3 – Comfy with impressive range

The Kia EV3 is going to be the Urban Cruisers toughest challenger, because it’s one of the best small EVs around. For just over £30,000 you get loads of interior space, up to 375 miles of range and loads of standard equipment. The endless warning chimes can get annoying, but it’s really comfortable and relaxing once you’ve switched those off.
2. Skoda Elroq – Cavernous practicality for a bargain price

The Elroq is Skoda doing what it does best – building sensible cars which are easy to live with. This car has a massive boot, much larger than the Urban Cruiser’s, and you get loads of clever storage spaces inside. It may not be the most exciting EV out there, but it’s comfy and well-equipped for the money.
3. Volvo EX30 – Style and substance in one package

For some Scandinavian style, check out the Volvo EX30. This small SUV not only looks great, it also has a lovely interior, it’s comfortable to drive and you get loads of safety kit. It does fall down on practicality thanks to a small boot and tight rear seats, but you may be willing to overlook this for the ballistic performance of the dual-motor version.
4. Hyundai Inster – Way more spacious than its size suggests

The Hyundai Inster is the closest thing to Dr Who’s TARDIS you’ll ever see on the road, because it offers interior space to rival much larger cars in a dinky package. It also looks great, and the clever rear seats can fold totally flat to turn your Inster into a little van. It’s a shame about the cheap cabin plastics, but this can be forgiven with a sub-£25,000 price tag.
5. Cupra Born – Sporty styling and decent range

If you’re after something a bit sporty-looking, the Cupra Born is the EV for you. It’s a handsome car, and the interior is just as nice to look at. The Born is also spacious inside, and you can get up to 342 miles of range. It’s just not quite as fun to drive as the styling would suggest.
6. MG4 – Fantastic value and fun to drive

The MG4 is a former Carwow Car Of The Year winner thanks to its impressive value for money and funky styling. You get loads of kit as standard, and through Carwow at the time of writing you can get one for under £22,000. The MG4 isn’t as spacious as a Cupra Born, but it’s more fun to drive on a twisty road.
7. Renault Megane E-Tech – Parisian flair and a great infotainment system

The Renault Megane E-Tech is fitted with an excellent Google-based infotainment system which is as easy to use as your smartphone, and that’s not all this French EV has going for it. The interior is lovely, albeit a bit cramped in the rear, it looks great and it’s good to drive.
