The Mercedes CLA’s interior is well built but material quality falters in places

The sporty and snug design of the Mercedes CLA cockpit has started to show its age – the current A-Class has already received a new interior so expect the CLA to follow suit. While well screwed together, you can’t help but think this is a dashboard from a bygone era, especially if you look at the centre console with its number pad – something mainstream smartphones did away with back in 2007 when the first iPhone was released. By comparison, an Audi A3 Saloon looks much more modern thanks to it’s Virtual Cockpit.

Infotainment
The Mercedes CLA gets an infotainment system with a seven-inch screen mounted in the middle of the dash. Unfortunately, the way it’s integrated into the overall dashboard design is less gracious than in the Audi A3 and as a result, it all looks a bit incongruous.
There are two levels of the infotainment system, with the more expensive one coming with internet connectivity and Garmin-based sat-nav. The cheaper makes do without sat-nav, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is standard across the range so, provided you have a good internet connection, you can use the phone’s sat-nav instead and beam it on the central screen.
