MG small car range: current models
MG’s small car lineup consists of the MG3 Hybrid — an alternative to the Toyota Yaris — and the all-electric MG4 hatchback.
MG3
The MG3 Hybrid+ wants to have the Toyota Yaris’ cake and eat it, by offering frugal motoring at a lower price than the Yaris. In that, the MG3 succeeds, and it’s faster and roomier than the Yaris too. Still feels cheap in places, though, and the touchscreen is dreadful.
MG4 EV
The MG4 EV arrived to challenge the likes of the VW ID3 and the Cupra Born, and it succeeded in doing so by being cheaper to buy than either, but with comparable electric range and performance. Range stretches to 323 miles for the big battery version. While the cabin is too cheap in places, the MG4 is actually really quite good fun to drive — more so than the Volkswagen ID3.
MG4 EV XPOWER
The MG4 XPOWER tilts its hat not only to the early-2000s MG hot hatches, but even to the 1980s MG Metro 6R4 rally car — and it’s faster than any of them, hitting 62mph from rest in just 3.8 seconds, thanks to 435hp from two electric motors. Fast then, but not that much fun to drive — a standard MG4 is more responsive in corners — and while it’s cheap for how fast it is, the cheap-o cabin annoys more at this price.
