Afeela is a joint project between Sony and Honda, and it’s launching two new electric cars over the next 12 months. Both have been revealed at the CES technology show, and here’s everything you need to know.

This is the Afeela 1, and it’s an electric saloon car from a new brand created by Sony and Honda. As you might expect, it’s loaded with cutting edge infotainment tech and driver aids, and sales will start in California this year.

On top of this, the new Afeela Prototype has also been revealed. This is essentially an SUV version of the Afeela 1, and the production version will hit the streets in 2028.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

New Afeela 1: What is this car?

We’ve seen a lot of new car brands launched over the past few years, and a lot of them come from China. However, Afeela is actually a new Japanese brand, and it’s the result of a joint venture between Sony and Honda.

That means this car is pretty high-tech, as you’d expect from the creator of the PlayStation. It’s fitted with Level 2+ autonomous driving aids, which essentially means the car can drive itself from A to B with little-to-no intervention from the driver. You just need to be behind the wheel and alert in case you have to take over.

The Afeela 1 also uses an AI-based voice assistant which you can talk to in a natural way – as though you were talking to another human. It can control functions throughout the car, or answer any general questions you might have.

If you consider yourself a bit of a gamer, then you’ll love the PS Remote Play feature. This allows you to remotely access your PlayStation at home using a screen in the car, so you can keep yourself entertained on long journeys in the back of the car.

An exact range figure for the Afeela 1 hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it should be capable of around 300 miles on a charge. Prices start from 90,000 USD, which equates to around £67,000. Sales will start later this year in California, before expanding to the rest of the United States over time.

New Afeela Prototype: the SUV version

Afeela also revealed a new car simply named the Prototype at the CES Technology show, and you can think of it simply as an SUV version of the Afeela 1. It shares similarly minimalistic styling to that car, and you can also expect around 300 miles of range.

Like the Afeela 1, this car will also be capable of Level 2+ autonomous driving. The brand wants to go a step further than this in the future as well, because all models are fitted with the hardware needed to support Level 4 autonomous driving.

This means that in certain circumstances, the driver can remain totally hands-off and focus on other tasks, such as playing a game or reading a book. You still have the option to take over in emergency situations though.

A production version of the Afeela Prototype is due in 2028, however don’t expect to see this car, or the Afeela 1, make their way to the UK any time soon.
