Car changing is a big deal

The free, easy way to change your car online

From the weekly shop to family holidays, a good boot can make everyday life easier. These are the 10 cars whose owners rate their boots most highly in the latest Driver Power survey.

A good boot needs to do more than just fit your shopping. It should be easy to load, make the most of its space and have room for everything from pushchairs to sports gear.

So, which cars get the thumbs-up from the people who drive them every day? The latest Driver Power survey gathered feedback from more than 100,000 UK motorists. Here are the 10 cars that owners rate highest for their boots.

We also have a Carwow boot space leaderboard for you to check out. It shows how many suitcases our very own Mat Watson has managed to cram into the boots of 33 different models.

  1. Tesla Model Y
  2. Vauxhall Frontera
  3. Peugeot 5008
  4. Vauxhall Grandland
  5. Ford Kuga
  6. Ford Puma
  7. Hyundai Tucson
  8. Volkswagen T-Roc
  9. Peugeot 308

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

1. Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y takes first place, and it’s easy to see why. This electric SUV has an impressive 854 litres of cargo capacity, putting many alternatives to shame. The Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 e-tron, by comparison, offer boot capacities in the 500- to 600-litre range.

However, a parcel shelf isn’t included as standard on the base model, and the boot floor feels a little cheap. There’s useful storage space underneath, though, along with deep side bins for stowing smaller items.

Model Y owners gave it high marks for its boot. One respondent said they “love the roomy boot”, while another praised its “ample space and practicality”.

2. Vauxhall Frontera

Coming in second is the Vauxhall Frontera, an SUV with a cavernous interior and decent boot space for a reasonable price. It offers up to 460 litres of capacity, including a large underfloor storage compartment. The boot’s square shape makes loading easy, and there’s no lip to lift items over.

Fold the rear seats down and capacity increases to 1,600 litres. The flat load floor makes sliding heavy items in easier, while a couple of tie-down points provide some extra practicality. Beyond that, though, there aren’t many additional features.

Respondents to the Driver Power survey praised the Frontera’s boot space. One owner described it as having “good luggage capacity”, while another praised its “great size”.

3. Peugeot 5008

In third place is the Peugeot 5008. This seven-seat SUV offers 348 litres of boot space with all seats in use. That’s a decent amount for a seven-seater, and roughly on par with the Skoda Kodiaq.

Fold down the rearmost seats, though, and capacity increases to a cavernous 916 litres. The seats fold flat easily, creating an unobstructed load bay, while the large, square boot opening makes loading bulky items a breeze.

“The boot space is ideal for moving around with two kids and our shopping,” said one owner. Another praised its “good-sized” boot, describing it as “much bigger than its alternatives”.

4. Vauxhall Grandland

The Vauxhall Grandland offers a 550-litre boot, giving it a slight edge over alternatives such as the Peugeot 3008 and Nissan Qashqai. The boot is a practical, square shape, and there’s plenty of useful underfloor storage, too. Handy clips hold the boot floor up while you load items underneath, leaving both hands free.

Driver Power survey respondents praised the boot space, with one describing it as “suitable for all my needs”. Another called it “well set out and large”.

5. Ford Kuga

The Ford Kuga has also made the top 10. This practical family SUV offers 526 litres of boot space (475 in the plug-in hybrid), which is enough for most families. A flush loading sill makes lifting heavy items easier, while four tie-down points, a 12-volt socket and handles to fold the rear seats add to its versatility. There’s only one shopping hook, though.

Fold the rear seats down for up to 1,603 litres of space. The floor isn’t completely flat, but there’s room for bulky items and a couple of backpacks under the floor, unless you opt for a spare wheel.

Owners praised the boot’s “good size and practicality”, while another said it’s “very roomy”.

6. Ford Puma

From one Ford to another, the UK’s best-selling car also impressed with its boot. The Puma offers 456 litres of space, with a wide, square load area and only a small loading lip. You also get tie-down points, luggage hooks and a 12-volt socket, while the flexible luggage cover is easy to use and stores under the floor when not needed.

Its standout feature is the ‘Megabox’: an 80-litre storage compartment beneath the boot floor. It’s useful for hiding valuables or carrying taller items, although it takes the place of a spare wheel.

One Driver Power survey respondent said they “love the boot space”, while another praised its “capacity and the little extra space underneath”.

7. Hyundai Tucson

Next up is the Hyundai Tucson, whose boot space varies by engine. The petrol model offers a generous 620 litres, dropping to 577 litres in the full hybrid and 558 litres in the plug-in hybrid.

Fold the rear seats down and capacity rises to 1,799 litres in the petrol model or 1,737 litres in the plug-in hybrid. Levers in the boot make folding the seats easy, and there’s a handy space under the floor to store the load cover.

Owners were impressed with the Hyundai Tucson’s boot. One respondent said it was “the main reason why I bought the Hyundai Tucson”, adding that it was “a very large space which I need”. Another said they “love the boot space”, describing it as a “great size for our family errands”.

8. Volkswagen T-Roc

The Volkswagen T-Roc also makes the top 10, offering up to 475 litres of boot space. That’s a useful step up for anyone moving from a Golf or similar family hatchback, and not far off the Nissan Qashqai’s 505-litre boot.

It beats the Toyota C-HR’s 388 litres, although the Peugeot 3008 offers more at 591 litres. The T-Roc’s sloping rear window does limit space for tall, bulky items, however.

Owners praised its practicality, with one appreciating the space for a spare wheel, while another simply described the boot as having “good boot space”.

9. Peugeot 308

Owners also rated the Peugeot 308 highly for its boot. It offers 412 litres of space, more than the Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Golf and many other family hatchbacks. Its square shape makes it easy to load bulky items, and there’s extra storage beneath the floor. However, the hybrid version loses 50 litres compared with petrol and diesel models.

The rear seats fold down easily from the boot, creating a large, mostly flat load area. There’s a slight ridge where the seats meet, which can make sliding heavier items forward trickier. You also get nets and tie-down points, but surprisingly, no 12V socket.

Driver Power survey respondents praised the boot, with one describing it as a “great size for all my needs”.

10. Volkswagen Tiguan

Rounding out the top 10 is the upmarket Volkswagen Tiguan. With 652 litres of boot space, it beats alternatives such as the Skoda Karoq, Kia Sportage and Honda CR-V. It’s ideal for family holidays and bulky pushchairs.

There’s no boot lip to lift items over, and the rear seats fold flat for easy loading. You can fold them down from the boot, although putting them back up is fiddly. Underfloor storage is useful for charging cables, while three-pin and 12V sockets add extra practicality. However, the optional premium sound system’s subwoofer takes up some of that space.

Owners also praised the Tiguan’s boot, with one describing it as “very smart and spacious”.
