Car changing is a big deal
Legroom can make or break a journey, especially for passengers in the back. These are the 10 cars whose owners are most satisfied with their rear-seat space, according to the latest Driver Power survey.
Whether you’re ferrying the family around or regularly carrying adults in the back, generous rear legroom can make a journey much more comfortable. But which cars leave their owners most impressed with the space available for rear-seat passengers?
The latest Driver Power survey gathered feedback from more than 100,000 UK motorists, asking owners to rate their cars across a range of areas. Here are the 10 models whose owners are most satisfied with their rear legroom.
- MG HS
- Vauxhall Frontera
- Ford Kuga
- Vauxhall Grandland
- Tesla Model Y
- Hyundai Tucson
- Peugeot 5008
- Audi A4
- Volvo XC40
- Hyundai Kona

1. MG HS

Claiming the top spot is the MG HS. This practical family SUV offers rear-seat space that’s easily on a par with the Citroen C5 Aircross or Kia Sportage.
A six-foot passenger can sit behind a six-foot driver with room to spare. The near-flat floor also leaves plenty of space for feet, although the centre seat is quite narrow. Thankfully, the flat bench means passengers don’t feel perched uncomfortably high.
It’s little surprise, then, that Driver Power respondents rated the MG HS so highly for rear legroom. One owner said it was a “good size for our family”, while another praised its value for money, saying “the value for money is unrivalled given the amount of space inside”.
2. Vauxhall Frontera

Taking second place is the Vauxhall Frontera, which offers impressive rear-seat space for a car of its size. There’s enough room for a six-foot adult to sit comfortably behind another, and it’s roomier than an MG ZS or Hyundai Kona, with space comparable to the Dacia Duster.
The wide-opening rear doors make fitting a child seat easy, although the fiddly zip-up Isofix covers are a nuisance. Once fitted, there’s plenty of room for a baby seat without having to move the front seat forward.
Owners were impressed by the Frontera’s rear legroom, with one describing it as having “plenty of room” and another calling it a “lovely and spacious car”.
3. Ford Kuga

Rounding out the podium is the Ford Kuga, a practical family SUV with plenty of rear legroom. Its wide-opening rear doors make fitting child seats easy, while adults get lots of room for their feet, knees and shoulders. Taller passengers may find headroom a little tight, particularly with the optional panoramic sunroof.
The rear seats also slide back and forth, so you can balance passenger comfort with boot space. Younger children should have a decent view out, too, thanks to the relatively low window line.
Driver Power respondents praised the Kuga’s rear legroom, with one owner describing it as “smart and spacious” and another calling it “very roomy and comfortable”.
4. Vauxhall Grandland

Also making the top 10 is the Vauxhall Grandland. This spacious, comfortable SUV offers plenty of room in the back, with enough knee room for a six-foot passenger to sit behind a six-foot driver.
There’s plenty of headroom, too, although things are a little tighter if you’re carrying three people across the back. The middle passenger may find their knees brushing the front seats, while shoulder room is limited.
Even so, owners were impressed with the Grandland’s rear-seat space. One respondent said it was “large enough for the family”, while another praised it for ticking “all the boxes, being spacious, comfy and practical”.
5. Tesla Model Y

Next up is the Tesla Model Y, a spacious and hugely practical electric SUV.
Getting into the back or fitting a child seat is easy, thanks to the Model Y’s large, wide-opening rear doors. The standard car can feel a little more enclosed than the Premium version, as it misses out on a panoramic sunroof.
However, there’s still plenty of head, leg and foot room for three six-foot adults. The only downside is that the middle seat isn’t as well cushioned as the two outer seats.
Driver Power respondents also rated the Model Y highly for its rear legroom. One described it as “incredibly roomy”, another praised its “space and practicality”, while a third said they “like the interior space in the front and back”.
6. Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson also scored highly for rear legroom. Getting into the back is easy, and there’s a good amount of space for both children and adults. Three grown-ups will find shoulder room a bit tight, though. The middle seat has a slightly raised base, but there’s still plenty of headroom and foot space.
The two outer seats are heated on the range-topping Ultimate model and have indented bases. These can dig into your thighs a little, but they’re otherwise comfortable.
Driver Power respondents also had plenty of positive things to say about the Tucson’s interior space. One called it a “great size for our family”, another described it as an “excellent choice for space and comfort”, while a third specifically praised the “good space in the back”.
7. Peugeot 5008

The Peugeot 5008, a family-friendly seven-seat SUV, has also made the top 10.
There’s plenty of room in the middle row, where three individual seats slide back and forth to make more space for passengers, the boot or the third row. Legroom and headroom are both decent, although three adults may find it a little narrow across the shoulders.
Adults won’t want to spend too long in the third row, where space is tighter. It’s better suited to children, although average-sized adults should manage shorter journeys if those in the middle row slide their seats forward a little.
Despite the tight third row, owners rated the 5008 highly for its rear legroom. One respondent said the “space is ideal for moving around with two kids and our shopping”, while another praised how “very spacious” it is while still allowing for “decent storage when all the seats are utilised”.
8. Audi A4

Also making the top 10 is the Audi A4, a well-built and comfortable saloon.
The A4 offers plenty of space in the back, with the two outer seats easily accommodating six-foot adults. The middle seat is less spacious, though, as it’s narrower and doesn’t have its own sculpted backrest.
Headroom and legroom are good overall, while the door pockets provide space for bottles and phones. The Isofix points are also easy to reach, making it straightforward to fit child seats.
Owners also rated the A4 highly for rear legroom, with one Driver Power respondent saying it has “lots of room in the back”.
9. Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 offers plenty of room in the back, with enough headroom for six-foot passengers even if you choose the panoramic sunroof. Standard Isofix points and wide-opening rear doors also make fitting child seats easy.
There’s room for three across the back, although the bulky transmission tunnel can get in the way of the middle passenger’s feet. If the centre seat isn’t occupied, it folds down to reveal a handy armrest with built-in cupholders.
Driver Power respondents also rated the XC40 highly for rear legroom. One owner said it “has plenty of room in the back as well as being incredibly practical”.
10. Hyundai Kona

Completing the top 10 is the Hyundai Kona, a stylish family SUV with plenty of space in the back.
Even taller passengers will find plenty of legroom and headroom, while the wide cabin means there’s enough room for three people across the rear seats.
There’s also plenty of space to fit a child seat without moving the front seats forward. The rear doors open almost 90 degrees, making access easy, and the Isofix points are simple to reach. They aren’t quite flush with the seat cushions, though, so lining up the child seat can be a little fiddly.
Owners also rated the Kona highly for rear legroom. One respondent praised its “lots of interior space”, while another described it as “comfy and spacious with plenty of room”.
