Skoda has just updated the hot version of its practical Enyaq electric SUV. Here’s what’s new, and what’s not so new about the vRS.

This is the updated Skoda Enyaq vRS. The outgoing version was tricky to recommend, not because it was a bad car as such, more because it seemed like a totally pointless addition to the lineup.

It wasn’t any more exciting to drive than the standard car, the extra power didn’t add much to the experience and it was almost impossible to tell it apart from the normal Enyaq in terms of styling, unless you went for the vRS-specific Hyper Green paint scheme. You were much better off saving a heap of cash and buying the excellent standard Enyaq.

So has a mid-life update made this warmed-up family car any more appealing? Or should you stick to the excellent standard Enyaq? Here are five things you need to know.

1. It’s not much faster

Powering the new Skoda Enyaq vRS is a dual-motor setup with all-wheel drive and 340hp, just like in the outgoing car. It’s also the same system you’ll find in the Volkswagen ID7 GTX, the Cupra Tavascan and the Ford Capri.

It’ll do 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds, a whole tenth of a second quicker than the old car but still slightly slower than a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N-Line.

2. The range is slightly better, as are the charging times

The previous Skoda Enyaq vRS had 336 miles of range if you went for the SUV version, and the coupe with its sloping roofline could manage 340 miles on a charge. Well now you get 340 miles from both bodystyles.

The DC fast charging speeds have also been improved, going from 175kW in the old car to 185kW in the new one. That translates to a two minute drop in the time it takes to go from 10-80% – the new one will do it in 26 minutes.

3. Skoda has made (slightly) more effort with the design

The old Skoda Enyaq vRS was almost impossible to distinguish from the SportLine version, but this new one does have a few more unique details to set it apart. The main one is found up front, where the lower air vents are larger and feature additional strakes.

You also get unique 21-inch alloy wheels, and the new vRS is once again available in that high-visibility green paint job just in case you lose it in a car park.

4. Chassis and suspension tweaks

The new Skoda Enyaq vRS sits on lowered suspension which drops it by 15mm at the front and 10mm at the rear, and you get adaptive dampers as standard which can adjust their firmness depending on how hard you’re driving.

These are changes the old vRS got as well, and they only really served to make what is usually a smooth and comfy cruiser into something firm and jiggly over bumps without making it any more fun in the corners. We’ll have to wait to drive the new one to see if it’s any better.

5. It starts from £51,660…

…and that makes it only slightly more expensive than the outgoing Enyaq vRS. You get plenty of desirable features as well including LED matrix headlights, electric massage seats and adaptive cruise control.

For just over £47,000 you could have a rear-wheel drive Sportline version of the Enyaq, which looks almost as sporty, offers better range and has similar standard equipment to the vRS. This new performance flagship needs to be really good to drive to justify the higher price tag.
