Car changing is a big deal
Chery has just announced a new flagship model, the Tiggo 9, with a 428hp plug-in hybrid system and a huge list of standard equipment – all for a very tempting price. News editor Jamie Edkins is here to walk you through this new SUV
- New Chery Tiggo 9 revealed
- Flagship seven-seater coming in December
- Priced at £43,105
- Loads of standard equipment
- 428hp plug-in hybrid system with 91 miles of EV range
This is the new Chery Tiggo 9, and as the Chinese brand’s new flagship model you can think of it as the cherry on top of the cake. It is the biggest, most powerful and most luxurious model it offers, and it’s all yours for just over £43,000.
That’s similar money to a mid-spec Skoda Kodiaq or a Volkswagen Tayron, but you have a whopping 428hp on tap and a list of equipment as long as your arm. Order books are open now, and first deliveries are expected in December this year.

New Chery Tiggo 9 price and specs
The price tag is going to be the Chery Tiggo 9’s biggest selling point, because there aren’t many cars which offer this much space and equipment for the money.
There are no trim levels or optional extras to faff about with, unlike the Volkswagen Tayron which offers you five different versions to wade through. You pay £43,105 for your Tiggo 9, choose which colour you want and enjoy the huge list of standard features.
Adaptive cruise control, a surround view camera, front and rear heated and cool seats, front massaging seats, and a power tailgate are just some of the toys you get. Spec a Tayron to a similar level with a plug-in hybrid engine and you’ll spend close to £50,000.
I really do believe that this simple approach to speccing a car offered by most Chinese brands is one of the biggest reasons they’re selling so well. You simply wander into the showroom, say you’d like a Tiggo 9 and everything is included in the base price. It’s a great experience for buyers, and one which a lot of manufacturers could learn from.
New Chery Tiggo 9 engine
Choosing the engine in your Chery Tiggo 9 is simple as well, because there’s just one option. It’s a 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid setup with three electric motors, and the combined output is a whopping 428hp.
That’s over 60hp more than the £77,000 Audi SQ5, and it means this seven-seat SUV can do 0-62mph almost half a second faster than a Volkswagen Golf GTI – the Tiggo 9 takes just 5.4 seconds.

These figures all look marvelous on papere, but in the real world you’re probably not that bothered about how quickly your family-friendly SUV can sprint away from the traffic lights. The more important stat, for me at least, is the all-electric range.
On a full charge, the Tiggo 9 can drive 91 miles without the engine kicking in. That’s the second-longest PHEV range of any car sold in the UK, only coming a couple of miles behind the Omoda 9.
New Chery Tiggo 9 design, interior and practicality
There’s not much to say about the way the Chery Tiggo 9 looks so I’ll keep it brief. It looks like a larger Tiggo 8, which in turn looks like a larger Tiggo 7, which in turn looks like an amalgamation of every generic SUV on the market. It’s a perfectly handsome-looking thing, but you won’t turn heads in the same way you might in a Peugeot 5008.

But the styling isn’t important, and you can make up your own mind on the way it looks. What is important is the interior space, because there is a shed load of it.

The Tiggo 9 offers seating for seven, but with the third row folded away you get a whopping 819 litres of boot space. That’s a few litres more than you get in a Kia Sorento, and it’s 191 litres more than you’ll get in a Hyundai Santa Fe. A Skoda Kodiaq does have more room (910 litres), but the Chery is still pretty impressive.

Up front you have a 15.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a wireless charging pad for your phone. There are very few physical buttons, however this is the case with all of Chery’s current cars so is to be expected.

What is cool is the Sony stereo system, which includes speakers integrated into the headrests. That’s a feature you don’t see very often on a car at this price.

The first Tiggo 9s will start to arrive in the UK in December, and we’ll report back as soon as we’ve had a look around the car to tell you what the interior quality is like and what it’s like to drive.
