7 cool used cars for the same price as a new Jaecoo 7

The Jaecoo 7 is a bold-looking SUV from China which bears more than a passing resemblance to a Range Rover. However, at just over £30,000 it’s much cheaper than a Range Rover, and you get loads of kit as standard.

It’s a tempting proposition, as long as you can live with the mediocre practicality and lacklustre driving experience. Look past these gripes and you have a really well-equipped and stylish SUV which undercuts most new alternatives on price.

However, what if you dive into the second-hand market? Searching for used cars can uncover some incredible bargains, and for the same price as a new Jaecoo 7 you can get some seriously cool metal.

1. Range Rover Velar

Why buy a wannabe Range Rover when you could have the real thing? For £30,000 you could have a 2020 Range Rover Velar with low miles and a powerful diesel engine. It’s a seriously stylish SUV with a lovely interior, and you also get loads of interior space.

You will have to consider running costs with a used Range Rover, because at this age it will be out of warranty and they don’t have the best reputation for reliability. You may be willing to put up with this though to have a car as desirable as the Velar.

2. BMW X3 M40i

For something a bit sporty, the BMW X3 M40i is well worth a look. It’s powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six engine which has 360hp and sounds great. It also handles well for a high-riding SUV, although this does come at the expense of comfort because the X3 is a bit firm over bumps.

At least it does have a really well-made interior. In fact, it feels posher inside than the latest BMW X3. There’s a good amount of rear legroom as well. We found a 2019 X3 M40i for just under £28,000.

3. Jaguar F-Pace

The F-Pace bowed out late last year to make way for Jaguar’s new range of luxury electric cars, which is a shame because it’s a rather lovely SUV. It’s great to drive, has a really good infotainment system and it’s a bargain on the second hand market.

Used prices start from as little as £20,000 for a 2020 model, and our £30,000 budget will get you a high-spec 2022 example with a punchy yet economical diesel engine. Just keep in mind that Jaguar has a similar reputation for reliability to Range Rover, so you might want to keep some money tucked away for any small niggles which may pop up.

4. Porsche Macan

That’s right – for the same price as a new Jaecoo 7 you could cruise away in one of the best premium SUVs out there: the Porsche Macan. It’s extremely well-built, good fun to drive and it’s practical, although you’ll want to avoid the slightly dull 2.0-litre engine.

That’s no issue with a £30,000 budget though, because for that price we found a handful of 3.0-litre V6 petrol models from 2016 and 2017. This is an engine much more befitting of the Macan, with 340hp on tap and a fruity exhaust note.

5. Skoda Octavia vRS Estate

Putting our sensible hats on for a moment, the Skoda Octavia vRS Estate is one of our favourite all-rounders. Under the skin it’s very similar to the Volkswagen Golf GTI, meaning it’s quick and really nice to drive on a twisty road, but it also has a massive boot and a cavernous interior.

For around £27,000 we found a few vRS Estates from 2023 with low miles. It may not be the most exciting performance car, but if you’re after a jack of all trades then this car is hard to beat.

6. Tesla Model Y Performance

Maybe you fancy an electric car? Well the Tesla Model Y Performance is one of the best-value used EVs out there. It’s got acres of interior space, loads of tech and supercar-slaying power thanks to its two electric motors.

The interior isn’t quite as posh as some German alternatives, such as the BMW iX1, but with the Model Y you get full access to Tesla’s excellent Superchargers, which is one of the most reliable charging networks around. Our £30,000 budget will get you a 2023 Model Y performance with around 50,000 miles on the clock.

7. Cupra Formentor

The Cupra Formentor is essentially a Volkswagen T-Roc R in a sharp Spanish suit, which makes it an interesting proposition. It’s properly quick, has loads of grip thanks to the all-wheel drive system and it looks more exciting than the VW.

The Formentor is pretty firm over bumps, but it’s still easy enough to live with day-to-day. For less than £30,000 you can have a 2022 Formentor with the 310hp petrol engine.
