The all-new Honda Civic first broke cover back in March 2016, and it’s thought the Japanese will release a hot version almost immediately after it launches in 2017. The next Civic Type R has not only been teased as a concept – heavily disguised versions of the new model have already been spotted testing at the Nurburgring circuit in images courtesy of Motorauthority.
Considering the current model’s only expected to have a two-year life span, it looks set to become something of a collector’s item. See how much you could save on the outgoing model by heading over to the Honda Civic Type R deals page.
2017 Honda Civic Type R styling
The previous Type R looks striking from the outside, and the wild vents, wings and splitters of the new concept should ensure the new model keeps the same in-your-face attitude. The 2017 Civic is longer, wider and lower than the model it replaces which, combined with the new bodykit, should help give the new model an even more aggressive stance on the road.
Though many of the prototype’s details are hidden behind camouflage, it’s clear that the Type R will feature a vast downforce-boosting rear spoiler – assisted by roof-mounted fins. The trio of central exhausts used by the concept is expected to make it into production, too.
2017 Honda Civic Type R driving and engines
That exhaust system will be connected to a similar 2.0-litre turbocharged engine to the current car. In order to keep up with the Ford Focus RS and the replacement for Renault’s Megane RS, power is likely to increase over today’s 306hp Type R – possibly as high as 350hp.
Despite the boost in power, Honda looks likely to keep a front-wheel drive layout and the same six-speed manual gearbox. The plentiful power will be managed by the fitment of a mechanical limited-slip differential as it is on the outgoing Type R.
2017 Honda Civic Type R release date
An official release date for the next Honda Civic Type R hasn’t been confirmed but, with the regular hatch set to make its debut in 2017 and the Type R already well into its testing phase, a late-2017 date for first deliveries seems likely.
