Seven alternatives to the BYD Sealion 7
April 30, 2025 by Jamie Edkins

There are dozens of electric SUVs coming from China to the UK, and one of the latest is the BYD Sealion 7. It’s got a lot going for it, including a lovely interior and loads of standard equipment, but a lacklustre driving experience may put you off.
It’s not like you’re stuck for choice in this market either, because plenty of other brands offer tempting electric cars for similar money. Here are seven of the best BYD Sealion 7 alternatives.
1. Tesla Model Y

The original Tesla Model Y was a great electric SUV for families, and a major overhaul in 2025 has only improved things. It’s comfortable to drive, hugely spacious and offers decent range. The lack of buttons inside can be frustrating, but at least the cabin feels suitably posh.
2. Hyundai Ioniq 5

SUVs don’t get much more striking than the Hyundai Ioniq 5. That retro-futuristic styling makes it look like something out of a 1990s video game, and the interior is really practical as well. It’s also cheaper than the Sealion 7, and it’s more comfortable to drive.
3. Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 is simply a brilliant all-rounder. It’s great to drive, offers loads of tech and it’s spacious inside, all while being super stylish. The boot may not be as big as the Sealion’s, but it’s still great value for money and has good driving range.
4. Polestar 4

If you’re after something a bit more premium-feeling, the Polestar 4 is a great shout. The interior is simply gorgeous, and you get loads of space in the rear seats as well. The lack of a rear window is something to get used to, but this is still a properly relaxing car to drive.
5. Volkswagen ID7 Tourer

When shopping for a practical family car you don’t necessarily have to look at SUVs, the Volkswagen ID7 Tourer makes a great case for the humble estate car. It’s cavernous inside, super-comfy to drive and packed with tech, just avoid the expensive GTX version as the extra power isn’t worth the loss in range.
6. Skoda Enyaq

Skoda has a long-standing reputation for no-nonsense practicality, and the Enyaq is testament to this. It may not be the most exciting thing to look at, but you get a massive boot, loads of interior space and plenty of clever features, such as an umbrella in the door and a hidden ice scraper in the boot.
7. Used BMW iX

A new BYD Sealion 7 costs £47,000, but for the same money you could get a two-year-old BMW iX and cruise around in a much more premium car. The iX feels properly posh inside, it’s fantastic to drive and you get loads of tech. The styling may be polarising, but you can’t see that from the lovely cabin.
