Chery Tiggo 8 alternatives: what is this Chinese SUV’s competition?
July 16, 2025 by Jamie Edkins

Chery, the Chinese brand which owns Omoda and Jaecoo, is making its UK debut with the Tiggo 8. You can find out more about this seven-seater hybrid in our dedicated news story, but in short it’s a large, plug-in hybrid SUV with 56 miles of pure electric range.
Prices haven’t been announced yet, but we expect the Tiggo 8 to start from around £40,000. The SUV market is a crowded one, so we’ve picked five of the best Tiggo 8 alternatives which it’ll have to fend off when it goes on sale.
Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.
The top 5 Chery Tiggo 8 alternatives are:
- Hyundai Santa Fe
- Volkswagen Tayron
- Peugeot 5008
- Skoda Kodiaq
- Kia Sorento
1. Hyundai Santa Fe

This will be the Tiggo 8’s biggest challenger, because the Hyundai Santa Fe isn’t just the best seven-seater you can buy, it’s the best SUV full stop. It was Carwow’s Car Of The Year in 2025 because of its cavernous cabin, posh interior materials and funky styling.
A diesel engine option would be nice, but that said the hybrid is just as economical as an oil-burner. You can also get a plug-in hybrid version with around 30 miles of electric range. Not quite as impressive as the Tiggo 8, but still plenty for most commutes.
2. Volkswagen Tayron

If you’re after something with an upmarket image, the Volkswagen Tayron is worth a look. It doesn’t just look posh, it feels posh inside, too with plenty of soft-touch plastics and solid build quality.
It’s a comfortable car as well, although you may want to avoid the R-Line model if comfort is your main priority as it has firmer suspension than the standard car. You also get a massive boot and palatial rear legroom.
3. Peugeot 5008

There aren’t many seven-seaters as stylish as the Peugeot 5008, it certainly makes the Chery Tiggo 8 look a bit dull by comparison. That French flair continues on the inside as well, and the materials are easily a match for any premium SUV.
The touchscreens are a bit fiddly to use, but at least you get a handy bank of shortcut keys which you can customise to show the features you use most often. The 5008 is also comfortable, and the rear seats are spacious.
4. Skoda Kodiaq

As all-rounders go, the Skoda Kodiaq is pretty hard to beat. It’s got a massively roomy cabin, a big boot, it’s comfortable to drive and there’s a wide range of efficient engines on offer, including a plug-in hybrid which can do a whopping 75 miles on electric power alone.
It may not be a head-turning SUV like the Peugeot 5008, but the Kodiaq is a sensible car which will be stress-free to live with thanks to its no-nonsense practicality.
5. Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento and the Chery Tiggo 8 have something in common – and that’s a brilliant seven-year warranty. That’s great peace of mind for owners, although not quite as good as Toyota’s 10-year coverage when you get the car serviced within its dealer network.
The Sorento comes with plenty of kit as well, and the middle row is pretty spacious. The third row of seats is best-suited for kids though, and the overall interior design is starting to show its age.
