New Kia EV5 alternatives: what to buy if you want an electric SUV right now
July 09, 2025 by Jamie Edkins

The new Kia EV5 is here – an electric SUV which will compete with the likes of the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID4. We’ve already managed to get hands-on with this new car, and it’s a spacious and well-equipped option for families.
Prices will start at just over £38,000, and the new EV5 will hit UK shores towards the end of this year. But what if you want a new electric family car now? Well here are seven great alternatives to the Kia EV5 for you to consider in the meantime.
The best Kia EV5 alternatives are:
- Kia EV3
- Hyundai Ioniq 5
- Skoda Enyaq
- Tesla Model Y
- Peugeot E-5008
- Volkswagen ID4
- Xpeng G6
1. Kia EV3

If you’re after an electric Kia now, the new EV3 is a great option. It actually shares a lot of parts with the EV5, but being smaller it has greater range. You get up to 375 miles on a charge, compared to 329 miles from the EV5. The driver assistance systems can get annoying at times, but it’s also really roomy for its size and comfortable to drive. Just keep in mind that it is smaller than the Kia EV5, with a 460-litre boot compared to the EV5’s 566 litres.
2. Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a great option if you want to stand out in the supermarket car park. With its sci-fi styling this thing will turn heads wherever you go, and the interior feels impressively posh while also being spacious. The boot isn’t as big as the Kia’s though.
3. Skoda Enyaq

For everyday practicality you can’t really go wrong with the Skoda Enyaq. It has a massive boot, palatial rear seats and it’s comfy to drive over long distances as well. The infotainment system is pretty fiddly to use, but the rest of the cabin is packed with clever features such as a clip for parking tickets and rubber grips in the cupholders to hold your bottle still.
4. Tesla Model Y

If you’re new to the world of electric cars, the Tesla Model Y is a great SUV to start with thanks to the excellent Supercharger network which is reliable and easy to use. The Model Y is also hugely spacious and good to drive, although the button-free dashboard layout may put some people off.
5. Peugeot E-5008

For a bit of style and flair, why not check out the Peugeot E-5008? It looks fantastic on the outside, and it has the interior to match. Build quality is up there with some posh German SUVs, and it’s really spacious inside as well. It’s a bit annoying that this seven-seater only has two ISOFIX points though.
6. Volkswagen ID4

The Volkswagen ID4 is a comfy, practical electric SUV which also offers decent range. Some models will manage almost 350 miles on a charge, 20 miles more than the Kia EV5 can do. The interior may not be as interesting to look at as the Kia’s, and some of the tech can be a bit glitchy, but the ID4 is still a solid choice as a family runaround.
7. Xpeng G6

Never heard of Xpeng? Well it’s a new Chinese brand which has landed in the UK with the rather excellent G6. It’s a smart-looking electric car with loads of rear legroom, excellent technology on board and 354 miles of range. The boot may be pretty average for this class, but the G6 is a great option if you’re looking for something a bit different.
