An updated version of the Ford Fiesta has been spotted out in the wild for the very first time before it’s officially revealed sometime before 2022.
Don’t expect any drastic changes, but the facelifted Ford Fiesta should get a few tweaks inside and out to bring it more up to date with the like sof the newer Vauxhall Corsa, Hyundai i20 and the upcoming Skoda Fabia.
2022 Ford Fiesta design
As these spy shots show, the Ford Fiesta won’t get a sweeping new look as part of its facelift. Instead, the update is set to introduce some subtle details changes to inject a bit of pizzazz into the styling.
For instance, there are new horizontal indicator bulbs in the headlights, and the front grille looks like it’s a bit narrower than the one you’ll find on the current car.
Overall, though, the updated Ford Fiesta will look broadly similar to the version it replaces – you can decide if that’s a good thing or not.
This particular prototype appears to be a new Fiesta Active – the jacked-up crossover-inspired model that comes with chunkier plastic body cladding and raised suspension.
2022 Ford Fiesta engines
Much like the styling, the Ford Fiesta won’t differ greatly from the current car in the engine department. This means the updated car should come exclusively with petrol power, with choices ranging from a 1.1-litre engine with 75hp to a 1.0-litre turbocharged option with 95hp, 125hp or 155hp.
If you need more power than that, a 200hp 1.5-litre turbo-petrol will also be available in the range-topping Fiesta ST hot hatch.
Likewise, gearbox options will likely be nigh-on identical to the current car, too. Expect all of the engines to come as standard with manual gearboxes, (five-speeds for 1.1-litre cars; six-speeds for 1.0-litre models), though some turbo-petrol Ford Fiesta versions should also be available with an optional seven-speed automatic.
It’s possible Ford will add mild-hybrid engines (such as those fitted to the Puma crossover) to the Fiesta’s range, but no full-on hybrid or plug-in hybrid options are expected. You’ll have to wait for an all-new Fiesta for that, which likely won’t arrive before 2025.
2022 Ford Fiesta interior
The spy shots don’t give you a great look at the facelifted Ford Fiesta’s interior, though it’s likely anyone who’s familiar with the current car’s cabin will feel right at home in the updated version. Judging by the photos, the updated Fiesta’s touchscreen display and dashboard binnacle surround look identical to the ones in the pre-facelift version.
Don’t be surprised if the changes end up being limited to a tweaked centre console control layout, a redesigned steering wheel and slightly plusher-feeling interior trim pieces.
2022 Ford Fiesta price and release date
Ford hasn’t yet said when the updated Fiesta will go on sale, though it’s likely the updated car will be available to order in late 2021 or early 2022. Prices shouldn’t rise by too much over the current model, so expect the updated Ford Fiesta range to cost from around £17,000.
