Audis third-generation A6 allroad quattro has been launched and is up to 20 per cent more fuel-efficient than its predecessors thanks, in part, to it being 70kg lighter. It looks tough, aggressive and purposeful but is it all show and no go?
The Allroad stands six centimetres higher than the Avant thanks to raised air suspension and features extended side sills, flared wings and steel underbody guards. Its effective and looks great and has no hint of the artificiality that can haunt some toughened estate cars.
The basic allroad can be ordered with a wide range of options including a head up display, ambient lighting, adaptive cruise control, 15-speaker Bang Olufsen stereo and internet access.
The interior not only luxurious and practical its huge. The boot space is 565 litres, which can be extended to a whopping 1,680 litres if you fold down the seats. Roof bars are standard and add to the allroads carrying capacity.
Three engines are available; two diesels and one petrol. The petrol engine is the supercharged 3.0 TFSI, which develops 306hp and 440 Nm of torque. It powers the allroad to an artificially limited top speed of 155mph and from zero to 62mph in 5.9 seconds. The combined average economy is 31.7mpg.
The diesel option is provided by two versions of the turbocharged 3.0 TDI tuned to produce 201bhp and 241bhp and 450Nm and 580Nm respectively. The 201bhp model should be enough for most drivers and returns 46.3mpg and a reasonable 159 g/km of CO2.
All three engines are mated to a seven-speed flappy-paddle gearbox and four-wheel drive transmission giving reasonable off-road performance in extremis.
If you fancy a brown A6 then youre in luck; Java Brown is a new colour that is only available on the allroad.
Price:Prices start at 43,145 OTR.
Available:Dealers will start taking orders in February 2012 for delivery in the Spring.
The previous generations of Audi allroad were very popular with good reason. They gave good performance on the road with a useful measure of city-tough and off-road ability. The new car looks terrific and the diesel models have good fuel consumption, so it should be another big hit for Audi.
