- New Fiat 500 expected to go on sale in 2019
- Should retain outgoing car’s retro styling cues
- Could benefit from a 48V hybrid system
- No official word on prices, yet
The funky Fiat 500 supermini will reportedly be replaced in 2019 by an all-new model that could feature hybrid technology to boost its fuel efficiency. Read on for full details and our exclusive render of this upcoming rival to the Mini hatchback.
The new car isn’t expected to look radically different to the outgoing model – it’ll probably retain the cutesy retro look that helped make the current 500 so popular. Its interior should also feature a similar ’60s vibe to the existing car with a more up-to-date infotainment screen, a subtly revised dashboard and new trim pieces and materials.
The upcoming 2019 model will probably drop the current 500’s 1.2-litre petrol engine in favour of an all-new unit boosted by a compact electric motor and a 48V electrical system. Two-cylinder Twinair petrol versions and a diesel model are also expected to be offered when the new car goes on sale.
2019 Fiat 500 price and release date
Fiat hasn’t announced when the new 500 will hit UK showrooms but order books are expected to open in 2019. A range of standard petrol and diesel models should cost approximately the same as the outgoing £11,350 car while new hybrid versions could cost closer to £19,000. We may have to wait until 2020 to see a high-performance Abarth version in showrooms, however.
