News editor Jamie Edkins has found some insanely cheap Tesla Model Ys on the used market, and he reckons this space-aged electric car could be just right for a growing family.

The Tesla Model Y has just been highly commended at the Carwow Car Of The Year Awards in the Outstanding EV category, and there are plenty of reasons why.

This electric SUV is packed with tech, good to drive and hugely spacious, and it’s priced well from new compared to alternatives. Let’s take a closer look at what makes the Model Y so good.

Why do we love the Tesla Model Y?

We’ll start with the tech, because Tesla’s infotainment software is second to none. The large touchscreen is clear and responsive, and the menus are super-easy to navigate. Usually I’d prefer to have proper buttons for things like the climate control, but I can forgive the Model Y for its lack of switchgear because the screen is so intuitive.

Then there’s the interior space. Rear legroom is palatial in the Model Y, and it has a massive boot which will easily swallow all of your family’s clobber. There’s also a good-sized front boot to keep your charging cables tucked out of the way.

Range is also impressive. The latest Model Y will do up to 390 miles on a charge, you can top up from 0-80% in just 27 minutes using one of Tesla’s readily-available and reliable Superchargers.

Tesla Model Y used prices: why you should consider buying second hand

The new Model Y is well-priced compared to alternatives. It costs just under £45,000 for the basic car with 311 miles of range, which is around £1,500 less than an Audi Q4 e-tron.

But if you’re after a real bargain, I reckon you should check out a used Model Y. I found a 2024 example for sale through Carwow with 26,630 miles on the clock for just over £24,000. That’s a saving of £20,000 compared to new.

This is a pre-facelift version of the Model Y, so there are a few differences to consider. The first being the interior, which is slightly less posh-feeling than the recently-updated Model Y. The exterior styling is also not quite as sleek.

It’s also got 283 miles of range rather than 390, but that’s still plenty for most people’s commutes, and you still have access to the same excellent Supercharger network for topping up on the go.

You also get the same cavernous interior space as the latest car, and the interior is just as easy to use. It’s still a great family car, and at this price it’s really hard to ignore.

Used Tesla Model Y alternatives

The Model Y is a fantastic all-rounder, but it’s not perfect. Here are a few alternatives to consider as well as this Tesla which do certain things a bit better.

Audi Q4 e-tron – The comfortable one

The Model Y can feel a bit firm and jiggly over bumps, so if you’re after something more comfortable then take a look at the Audi Q4 e-tron. It may be a bit more expensive, but it’s more relaxing to drive.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 – The head-turner

The Model Y isn’t the most exciting electric car to look at, so if you want something which stands out then the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is worth a look. The space-aged styling gives way to a spacious and well-made interior, but the boot isn’t as big as the Tesla’s.

Skoda Enyaq – The jack of all trades

If you’re after no-nonsense practicality and value for money, check out the Skoda Enyaq. There are some great used deals on this spacious and comfortable SUV, but the infotainment system isn’t as good as the Model Y’s.
